New Shenmue III Video Shows the Return of QTE Mechanics

Ys Net has shared the second “Development Report” video, where they give fans and Kickstarter backers a look at the development of the sequel.

Featured above, the second developer diary shows off a brief glimpse at the series’ hallmark QTE mechanic, a dialogue meeting, a game designer’s workspace, a brief test play, and a meeting with Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki.

In the same update, Ys Net apologized for the game’s delay since the last update, and promised they’ll be more timely in monthly updates.

Shenmue III is currently in development for both PlayStation 4 and PC.

Shenmue III is the only game where you can make a video showcasing QTE’s as a feature and I’d get excited. Glad they kept the sound effects.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

Its amazing how one of the most beloved franchises introduced one of the most hated trends in gaming

  • Malcolm_Ecks

    God of War. Yakuza.

  • Malcolm_Ecks

    Most Platinum Games releases.

Shenmue did QTE’s quite elegantly though. Fucking up a couple didn’t stop gameplay and it even had a machine on the arcade to train you specifically on them.

Most other games do them poorly, they’re not putting in the amount of effort Shenmue did.

  • TheOnceAndFutureKing

I think the problem with other games is that QTE doesn’t really blend well with action games, its seen as lazy padding by most. For a more interactive story game like Shenmue it works a lot better.

  • God of war gets a lot of hate for QTEs yet they do it wonderfully. Fuck the haters.

  • Himegami Aisa

Also present in its sister series Yakuza, which few people complain about. I guess it really depends on the type of game and implementation. QTEs just to make sure people are paying attention to cutscenes in some doubtless mindless action game is what comes to mind for most people, which is probably why it’s so reviled.

  • Mr0303

You’re right, the QTEs are quite terrible in Bayonetta.

  • Boz

My favorite QTEs are in Resident Evil 6

  • Mr0303

I honestly don’t know why they are so hated. They’ve been in gaming for decades and in some cases they are implemented well, while in others not so much.

  • luggage lad

I’ve never understood why they’re hated either. I thought they were pretty cool when they first came out, and I still like them.

  • Mr0303

They could be poorly implemented, but that’s true for any game mechanic.

  • Random Dude

I think it started from Resident Evil 4 (the hate, not the mechanic) which is rather unforgiving, especially the knife-fight sequence.

  • InfectedAI

I would enjoy the RE games a lot more if they didn’t have QTEs.

  • Fenrir007

While I absolutely hate most QTEs, it just wouldn’t be Shenmue without those.
