Rumor: Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Sequel Put on Hold

A new rumor has claimed Square Enix is putting the Deus Ex franchise on hold, possibly even cancelling the planned sequel to last year’s Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

The new rumor, via sources confirmed by Eurogamer, has put the blame on Square’s recently announced, behemoth Marvel project that spans multiple games. This new focus, combined with reportedly underwhelming sales of Mankind Divided, had the publisher make the move to put the Deus Ex franchise on hiatus.

The rumor is quite unfortunate if true, as Mankind Divided left a number of story points unresolved, which their sources claim stems from the game becoming too large in scale. To combat this, they cut a portion of content and story bits, leaving them on the table for a third and final game.

The latest downloadable content for Mankind Divided, “A Criminal Past,” is set to launch on February 23rd.

In case you missed it, you can find our review for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided here (we highly recommend it!).

Considering the clusterfuck it became due to Square Enix’s own greed, it’s probably best the next one stay on hold for awhile. Pains me as I love Deus Ex but I don’t need a repeat of what happened with MD.

  • vonSanneck

When publishers and their dev teams don’t see eye to eye. More so when the former is filled with people who don’t give a crap about video games.

  • Madbrainbox

Remember the preorder shit you tried to pull Squeenix? No?Don’t you think that may have something to do with why the game was received so poorly?
    Fuck this.

  • Neojames82

I kinda wish the Square Enix wouldn’t have this series anymore. Not saying the “ruined” Deus Ex entirely, they at least put some effort into these games. But SE being the publisher will ruin it more with their stupidity and will drive it into the ground and will hold the IP hostage a la EA with numerous titles.

  • catazxy

MD was a dumb idea from the beginning, Adam’s story should have ended with HR. There was no point in a sequel with the same character, since you can make a new, more interesting one. I only feel sorry for the level design devs, since the amount of detail the world of MD has is so impressive, but the story, tha characters, the location, the augmentations, were meh…..

  • NuclearKangaroo

I never asked for this… what a shame

  • Anon_Amous

    >kill Deus Ex for more capeshit

Why contain it? Let the capeshit spill onto the streets.

  • thanks for expressing my feelings with memes.

  • sanic

I’d rather more do sex than marvel shit, every game besides ultimate alliance sucks anyways.

  • Nagato

I don’t disagree with your general sentiment, but given the popularity of the replacement they’re getting to work on instead it might not be too much of a punishment…

  • Uncle Ocelot

It’s kind of a shame that when we do get another dood sex it’ll probably be another prequel with Jensen again.

“A new rumor has claimed Square Enix is putting the Deus Ex franchise on hold, possibly even cancelling the planned sequel to last year’s Deus Ex: Mankind Divided”

I hope this turns out to be true. Square shit all over thief, deus ex, legacy of kain, and tomb raider and it needs to stop.

  • BanBrado

Honestly i’d rather Squeenix go fuck up capeshit than continue shitting out mediocre sequels to one of my favorite games.

  • Madbrainbox

Good point.Haven’t thought of that. It’s still a shitty situation that the fans of the series won’t see the end of it but the dev is most likely fine.

  • porkbun

Square Enix is on a fast track to become the next EA.

  • alterku

I was waiting for the actual ending to the game before buying. If it never comes I probably won’t ever be interested.

  • Mr.TopKek

Honestly, after the shit show that was MD, this is probably for the best.

  • Paganator

They made what feels like half a game so they could make a sequel, then when it doesn’t sell well because it’s missing half of the story, they use that as a reason not to create the sequel that would complete the story. Brilliant. Just brilliant.

  • Hirasugi

Square Enix is so full of shit. I’m sure the game did fine by any normal measure. Remember when Square pissed right in the faces of the Tomb Raider devs when they said the 3.8 million in sales was a “disastrous failure”? All the while they personally waste untold millions redoing work on FF Verses 13…err I mean FF15. Not sure where I heard this so take it with a grain of salt, but I remember hearing that FF14’s was so mismanaged that a female texture artist had nothing to do besides painting a few rocks for like a year lol

  • Travis Touchdown

Square is definitely extremely mismanaged. It’s only a matter of time until they pull another Spirits Within and go under completely.

  • Derceto

Brilliant. SquareEnix destroys Mankind Divided sales with microtransactions, “augment your preorder”, pre-order DLC bulls**t, mobile garbage tie-in, cutting 1/3 of the game out, and then puts series on hold in order to shovel out more Marvel drivel. Like the world doesn’t have enough of that crap already.

Just sell the franchise off already. The only reason HR was any good, was because SE kept their disgusting paws off it, as it was a “low key” title in their eyes. After its success, they of course had to fist f**k every s**tty practice in modern gaming into it, because they’re SE, and they have s**t for brains.

  • epicurius7

Didn’t have resources to finish story.
    Still making DLC.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

You say that like SE is immortal like EA; it’s already came close two times. Only thing that needs to happen is FF losing casual interest.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

The Legacy of Kain thing didn’t happen before they bought Eidos?

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

Even the old arcade Marvel games?

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

I’m banking on another FFXIV since the one who started the development on Spirits got canned .

  • Oh yeah, it’s just the fucking franchise’s fault, I mean who the FUCK even wants to play Deus Ex, it’s got nothing to do with how shit Square Enix is.

  • Miguel Angel Opazo Arancibia

I would rather way some years for a better game rather than a rushed one.

  • sanic

that one is mostly okay, welcome to die

  • Jumanji Joe

    Nosgoth happened after the buyout

  • SiliconNooB

I’ll laugh if the Marvel stuff flops.

  • SiliconNooB

I didn’t get it because I heard how incomplete it was – and I can only imagine that many others felt the same way.

  • Alex Pimenov

Just imagine that after Shanghai in DE:HR you see credits rolling. And well MD is even shorter/smaller game than single Shanghai segment in HR.

  • Jonbo298

and the dlc thus far has been shit. Here, have more Breach content! More patches for breach performance! Oh, here’s a 2 hour side story but ‘lol repick your augmentations because we’re lazy’. By the way, Breach is now F2P! Augment your microtransactions today

  • Artorius

This is disappointing but, with how mediocre “Mankind Divided” is, it’s probably for the best.

  • foxhound20071980

I just want to know how Adam is connected to JC
