Street Fighter V Shipped Less Than 100K Copies From April to September 2016

street fighter v 06-11-15-1

It appears as though Street Fighter V has not sold as much as Capcom would have hoped for, if their financial report is anything to go by.

A user on NeoGAF compiled the information on the games sales numbers and determined that between April and September, Street Fighter V shipped less than 100k copies across all platforms.

This situation is only made worse for Capcom as they were expecting to sell 2 million units by the end of March, which as of now they’ve undershot that number by around 600k copies.

I’m sure the money Sony played them to make it console exclusive will help offload some of the loss.

  • Touma

that’s what happen when you ship an early access game as a full game

  • Fear Me I Am Free

I heard 5 was pretty trash, plus people were mad about the censorship too.

  • Mr0303
  • catazxy

A game can be patched later on, but it can only launch once….

  • Mr0303

The rest of the sales are DLC.

  • Madbrainbox

Hopefully Bandai Namco learned something from this and Tekken 7 will have a better launch.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

Tell that to Final Fantasy fans.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

I’m sure they learned all they needed to from SFxT.

  • Chocolate ISISCream

A shame, Capcom’s morale would be at its lowest if the FGC wasn’t so full of capcucks still playing this shitty game.

  • OSad

Welp, make that eighteen new Monster Hunter games then.

  • Leandro Teixeira

    They shoud’ve kept the booty

  • buddyluv324

At the end of the day, Capcom has no one to blame but themselves for releasing possibly one of the worst and incomplete SF titles.

  • ivanchu77

That´s what happens when you cater only to small bocal guetto like the FGC , not everyone that plays street fighter is a hardcore tourney player, in fact tourney players are a huge minority.

More finished games and less rushing games so they are on time for EVO, even street fighter from the super nintendo had a arcade mode

  • Smug

The art style used in 5 also made some characters look pretty weird, uncanny valley even.

  • Uncle Ocelot

It’s what happens when you neglect the casual fanbase (the majority) in order to cater to the small minority of hardcore fans, releasing the game months early, leaving out basic features and half the game in the process so that the tourneyfags could practice for EVO. Sad!

  • Uncle Ocelot

    Battered wives

  • goodbyejojo

uh-oh, you know what this means? no new street fighter game for a long while, remember when CAPCOM said that if a IP does not sell over 2 mill, its not worth pursuing for CAPCOM anymore.

  • sanic

Man I dunno they did like 1 thing right and 20 things wrong and I have this feeling they’ll shrug and go “oh I guess that one right thing was actually a bad idea” capcom doesn’t respond normally to situations.

  • I like how people are complaining about this game pandering to small audience when the site’s name is NICHE gamer. And if people cared about the single player experience the latest Gear game would have done MKX numbers.

  • Uncle Ocelot

The difference is that Street Fighter has always appealed to a large audience, it was never a niche series.

  • Mellow_MH

    No Makoto, no buy.

  • True Goddess Reincarnation

and then make people pay for characters or play the game to death to unlock them.

  • lucben999

Bah, booty is for pasty nerds. Now that it’s a respectable e-sport and they get to hang around with all the hip and cool crowd I’m sure all the fans they got from ESPN will turn this into a goldmine… r-right?

  • lucben999

I’d say they were trying to get attention from a more mainstream audience if anything, like sports fans outside of gaming, hence all the censorship and drama.

  • Kakaku

The art is terrible. Its like a hellish mix between cartoony and realistic.

  • Ex-loyal Capcom fan of over 20 years here.

Capcom can go and screw themselves after the Rainbow Mika, Cammy and Juri censorship, and their pledge to staff “diversity” by discriminating against male applicants and male employees.

  • Madbrainbox

Was that bad?Haven’t played a Tekken game since 5 and now I’ll pick this one on PC if it turns out to be good.

  • John Smith.

If Capcom is smart, they’ll be looking back at this and ask the three most difficult questions ever.

    1: What went wrong?
2: Why did it go wrong?
3: How can we avoid this in the future?

I’d be optimistic about this, but most crparations these days seems to go “Fuck it! It’s not our fault, it is the consumers fault for not wanting this enough!”

  • Pirate Booty

It’s basically an e-sports game for the die-hard SF fans.

It didn’t support any single player matches at launch even.

Of course the playerbase for these kind of games is negligeable.

  • SF5? Oh yeah that game existed, Nah i’m good, never going back to it, enjoying way too much Blazblue CF and Kof 14.

  • Bret Hart

“But but but The fighting game community is Street Fighter!”

Wonderful news. Be sure to celebrate by buying actual complete games like MKX, Guilty Gear Xrd, DOA5 Last Round, Smash Bros Wii-U, Pokken!

  • Snow

Let’s not forget in their attempt to create an anti-cheat for this game, 6 months into it’s life, they installed root kits on everyone’s computer.

  • orbo

Piss everyone off with twenty versions of street fighter 4 and marvel vs capcom 3, release a new street fighter game that nobody asked for, half ass it in every way possible to rush it out, ignore complaints about being sold a half finished product, rootkits and pander exclusively to the fighting game tournament scene that is an extreme minority of the people that play fighting games.

Well gee, I sure can’t see any reason not to buy the latest turd squeezed from the cheeks of crapcom!

  • catazxy

Yeah, SF4 nailed the look, but then GG Xrd came out and took the 1# spot, in my eyes

  • catazxy

Man, that’s half the global population

  • AR7777

SFxT is not a Tekken game, it’s made by capcom.

  • Zanard Bell

I’d even throw in the Naruto fighting games just to piss them off.

  • Zanard Bell

  • Vcom7418

    Wait, wut?
All characters were included for free with the updates

  • Vcom7418

Would still argue that the original is still the worst.
Most incomplete? Yeah, that’s definitely correct.

  • Andres

    nice meme

  • True Goddess Reincarnation

Nope, you had to use money you could earn by playing shitloads or getting the season pass.

  • Zombie_Barioth

I was about to say you forgot Soul Calibur, then I realized they haven’t made a new one yet.

Oh well, there’s always SCII HD and Tekken.

  • No_Good_Names_Ever

Capcoms microtransaction bulshit made it legendary. It pissed fans off so bad that it scared Namco into shutting up about TekkenxStreet Fighter in hopes that everyone would forget about it.

  • luggage lad

The game plays great imho, definitely a very fun SF game to play by any measure. The only problem is its incomplete, weakest roster of any SF (other than the first) and rather than give meaningful updates Capcom is more interested in trying to exploit their fans with expensive e-sports DLC.

  • luggage lad

    he said TxSF not SFxT

  • coopermon

What do they expect. The stupid price they’re selling it for. Id buy it on pc if it was £20 but £40 to £45 for the base game and a further £20 for a season pass. Ridiculous.

  • gwadahunter2222

It’s something Capcom worked so hard for

  • SiliconNooB

You did this Capcom. You’ve only yourselves to blame!

  • SiliconNooB

The characters kind of look like plasticine…

  • EroBotan

this is what happen when you make an ugly Ken

  • DariusQ

SFV is a failed experiment in game design which spreads itself thin trying to appease all demographics while simultaneously pissing everyone off. The actual game engine is pretty solid but the lack of any real single player modes is unforgivable. The ONLY thing SFV is good for is playing tournaments and even then it is boring as hell to watch.

  • Travis Touchdown

    Pokken outsold Street Fighter V.

That being said, SFV is only one of the many Playstation blunders this year.

  • epy

Nah I’m sure they pleased some people removing it. Sure they don’t buy or play their games. but still!

  • Alistair

HaHa to the “Censorship In games THAT would Increase Sales” Group has proven Wrong.

It made my day. Censorship offer no incentive, and low sales. the only incentive is for oversensitive cunts that what censorship is. 100K ouch crapcom OUCH.

Maybe next time crapcom would not consider censorship ever Again.

  • Alistair

The “Moral” Of this story is never censored a game for the largest Fanbase.

  • Fear Me I Am Free

Really? I’ve heard the opposite, that 4 plays better. But that just might be preference.

  • Bitterbear

Wouldn’t that also prove that catering to the hardcore crowd is not a profitable endeavour?

  • Bamf

“e-Sport?” Is that what fat people are calling it?

  • Bamf

    Don’t forget Killer Instinct :)

  • Bamf

They haven’t made a new one since Soul Caliber came out. It’s just been the same game repeated over and over again.

    “Eternally retold…”

  • Bamf

Apparently sex is a bad thing when it’s outside of Japan.

  • “Maybe next time crapcom would not consider censorship ever Again.”

Unfortunately they’ve pledged to include “diversity” gender quotas for their company. So they will probably do it even more in the future.

  • Zombie_Barioth

Yeah sorry , but no, otherwise you could say the same thing about most fighting games when taken at face value.

Now if you’re arguing they haven’t made a better one, that’s debatable. A lot of people seem to consider CSII the best.

  • Bret Hart

    Don’t forget KOF14!

    “A user on NeoGAF”

  • A Punk Named Katsuya Jonouchi

Considering the hell you have to go through in order to get FM, even with the addition of Daily Missions, you might as well just buy the characters.

  • Right. I guess the forum is a little harder than most to get an account for but that’s really it.

  • Death Metal

They can be acquired for free, but that requires some grinding for which the game also doesn’t offer a lot to do.

  • Kaneda

dragons dogma 2 should have been a priority instead of this

  • AR7777

    No, he said SFxT.
TxSF is not even a thing. Why would he ask if TxSF “was that bad” when it doesn’t even exist?

  • swosho

    Skullgirls, man

  • luggage lad

I somehow really read the comments wrong I think

  • AR7777

    no problem mate, take care

  • CyberGecko950

I agree with you, but SF4 even before all the numerous updates felt like a more complete game than SF5 did.
