The Final Fantasy VII Fan Re-Translation is Finally Available, Just Beacause

final fantasy vii 05-22-15-1

Many fans of the classic and iconic Final Fantasy VII remember the game fondly, however, the Playstation JRPG was known to have issues with its translated script.

Some of these run the gamut of simple lines of dialogue, item names, attack names, although some were quite noticeable – like the name of a main character. The project is hilariously named Beacause, because of the only line uttered by Jenova in the game. The above image is an example of the original translation.

This is a complete relocalization for the game from the ground up, based on the original Japanese text. The goal of the entire project is to have a finished project that is as professional and accurate as possible. The team used official sources to also minimize errors in context, and spelling. What this is not: an attempt to rewrite FFVII or to warp any of its original content, or a “literal” translation of the original Japanese text.

Here’s an example of the original localization, vs. the new re-localization:

Original

{YUFFIE}
“Are you waiting for {CLOUD}?”
“He’s flying right now, so you can’t get him.”
“Were you going to force me into the submarine right now?”
“Quit it! If you want to go, then just leave me behind.”
“…ooooooh. What’re you talking about? I…”

Relocalized

{YUFFIE}
“{CLOUD} … Have you decided where we’re going yet?”
“Come on, I can’t take much more of this.”
“Hey, you’re not thinking of shovin’ me in that crappy sub, are you!?”
“I won’t go! Never! Leave me here, leave me here!”
“…Urrrk. What am I saying?”

Here are the key features of the re-translation:

  • Translated and localized from the ground up.
  • Every piece of text looked at and updated.
  • Option to keep original place names, character names, and series canon.
  • Option for American English (as opposed to British English).
  • Some unused dialogue reinstated.
  • Scenes accidentally missing in original game reinstated.

There’s also an optional collection of seven mods that you can utilize (or in parts), dubbed The Reunion, which run the gamut of completely overhauling menus, enabling 60FPS battles, and more.

The seven mods are as follows:
