Discotek Media has announced they’re finally localizing classic mecha anime Zegapain alongside its sequel movies.
While Sentai Filmworks pledged to bring the classic mecha anime westward back in 2013, it was never released. Now, Discotek is finally bringing the series west, news confirmed at Otakon 2025.
The original Zegapain 26-episode series is coming west “soon” alongside its 2016 prequel movie Zegapain ADP as well as its 2024 sequel movie Zegapain ADP, all in one blu-ray disc set.
The new Blu-ray release for all three Zegapain anime features will include both the original Japanese audio and subtitles, as well as an English dub. The set will come with an extra disc just for extras, too.
This will be the first time the series and its film are released in the west on Blu-ray and in one complete set, as the original anime series was released via Bandai Entertainment only via several individual DVDs.
Originally released back in 2006 for Japan, Zegapain was a joint effort by Sunrise, TV Tokyo, and Dentsu, with Masami Shimoda directing and Mayori Sekijima on the script. Takehiko Itō and Akihiko Yamashita designed the characters, while Ayako Ōtsuka composed its music.
Zegapain is set in a modern city called Maihama and follows protagonist Kyo Sogoru, a high school boy that leads an ordinary life. That is – until Kyo sees a beautiful girl, Shizuno Misaki, at the pool one day and discovers he’s the only person who can see her.
Kyo tries to enlist Shizuno for his swimming club but she asks for a favor in exchange – piloting a mecha for a mysterious organization known as Cerebrum. Things pick up dramatically after this as Kyo is drawn into a world of huge fighting robots and a constant questioning of reality.
Zegapain is one of those mecha anime series that I somehow missed when it premiered back in the early 00s, and I usually made it a habit of watching any mecha anime that came out – let alone from Sunrise. I’m very excited to finally watch it, now in a complete set with its prequel and sequel movies.
