Frontier Developments have released the Alpha 4 version of their ambitious space flight simulator, Elite: Dangerous, and the exhilerating thrill of hyperspace travel came with it.
Featured above, you can witness interstellar travel between two star systems, an experience that is pretty overwhelming to see, even from a simulation. In the Alpha 4 of Elite: Dangerous, players can hop between five different star systems, and they also have two new forms of travel – Super-cruise and the aforementioned hyperspace jump. Supercruise lets you simply travel through systems the old fashioned way, while hyperspace jumping is obviously the long distance option.
The game’s official site has some more about the sheer scope of the game:
“The five Alpha 4 star systems are themselves set within 400,000,000 star systems of the Milky Way galaxy, all of which are moving correctly; spinning and orbiting in an incredible ballet. Whilst exploration is currently limited to the five Alpha 4 systems, the ‘night sky’ is accurate wherever you travel.”
Elite: Dangerous is currently in development for PC and Mac, although you can get into the game’s ongoing beta via their website.
