Yoshinori Kitase Clarifies Final Fantasy VII Remake Being a Multi-Part Series

final fantasy vii remake 12-10-15-1

Following the news that Square Enix was going to break up the Final Fantasy VII Remake into a multi-part series a la Final Fantasy XIII, fans were confused, upset, and in some cases – angry.

Despite a clarification being found in an official statement from the publisher, fans were still not happy with the answer. Now, Square Enix boss and Final Fantasy VII Remake producer Yoshinori Kitase has released an official response, over on the Square Enix blog.

You can find his entire message, below:

For many years, people around the world have asked me “Will you ever remake FINAL FANTASY VII?” For many years I gave the same answers and on a personal level, having made the original FINAL FANTASY VII, did I really want to spend so many years making the same game again?

With FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE, we have the opportunity to go beyond the story, world and experience of FINAL FANTASY VII in ways we’ve always dreamed of – from the depths of Midgar to the skies above the Planet. The multi-part format enables us to expand the original story and turn it into an epic experience for fans and new gamers alike.

This past weekend at PlayStation Experience we were thrilled to present more of FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE. It was great to see so much excitement when we surprised everyone with the first gameplay footage and it was a treat for us to show that development is going well, and further along than perhaps many had realised. Just like when we revealed the announcement trailer at E3 earlier this year, we like surprising you.

One thing that we wanted to be clear about during this weekend to accompany the new trailer was the scale of this project. We wanted to tell you this now and not in the future so that you’d share our vision for what we want to deliver.

The biggest reason why we haven’t done a remake until now is because it’s a massive undertaking to reconstruct FINAL FANTASY VII from the ground up with the current technology. Producing a proper HD remake of FINAL FANTASY VII that maintains the same feeling of density of the original would result in a volume of content that couldn’t possibly fit into one instalment.

We’ve seen everyone’s comments and reactions to the news that FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE will be a multi-part series and many have speculated correctly as to the reason why we have made this decision. If we were to try to fit everything from the original into one remake instalment, we would have to cut various parts and create a condensed version of FINAL FANTASY VII. We knew none of you would have wanted that.

I hope that by explaining a little more about our design decisions that you can appreciate the size of this project and what we have planned for this remake. Going beyond the scale and depth of the world, narrative and gameplay from the original to deliver something that feels familiar yet new. As I said before, we like delivering surprises. :)

See you all soon and Happy Holidays!
Yoshinori Kitase

This is essentially the same kind of response we saw before – so it seems like Square Enix is sticking to their guns in saying a single release isn’t possible, and that they want to expand the game, while also breaking it up into multiple parts.

Seems like they’re gonna put a shit ton of filler to make each part last “as long as a full game” to justify this.

Sure you could fit it all into one “installment.” If HD space is going to be a problem by having it all as one thing, it’s gonna be a problem for anyone who buys it separately as well.

I’m still interested, because the more active combat system looks fun, but I want to know more about how the game is being done. Right now we know very little and everyone is (rightfully) assuming the worst.

The only way this episodic content would be acceptable is if it was done “per disc” Ex Episode 1 contains the story of Disc 1 like on PS1

Taken from another website, this reflects my feelings on the matter:

“They said why it’s multiple games (and yes, it’s multiple
games, rather than ‘episodic’. Think .Hack. They literally said FF7R-2
in an interview.). All you have to really do to see why this is being
done is look at the initial assault on the Mako Reactor – that’s like a
20 minute intro in the original, but redone in this style? That shit is
gonna be a like 3 hour action set piece. That whole fight against the
Shinra Troops was ONE PRE-RENDERED SCREEN on PS1. I’d rather it be 2-3
games than them cut stuff so making it doesn’t bankrupt them.”

The original is 40~ long approximately 90 hours if you compelte everything, as long as each installment is that long it should be fine.

That’s the biggest worry, or they’ll take every event and Michael Bay it the fuck up. I just don’t want them to include stuff from the compilation.

I get the argument about graphics and detail density, that’s really an industry problem rather than something specific to FFVIIR, but is it necessarily a good idea to stretch out the game like that? In an ideal world it’d mean more of a good thing, but realistically I’m expecting a whole load of filler.

The answer given is still a little confusing and still has me a tad worried.

So yeah, we understand that remaking the entire game will take up a lot of space and would require multiple discs. That was done with the original game, so to happen with this iteration isn’t exactly surprising.

But that doesn’t necessarily explain the need to release this in multiple parts though. One would argue that since the game will also play differently with a different battle system, that the games would be substantially longer, but then they also want to expand on the original with more places to visit and such. Why the “extra content” if it’s already plenty long?

As Diego_Dereshi already pointed out, I’m more worried that this “expanded content” is really just filler to justify splitting the game up. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, the content might be excellent for all we know. But now there’s the potential of it being terrible as well; it just adds a whole lot of more unknowns to this game and makes me doubt if it’ll be as good as the original.

It depends. There probably will be filler, but there is a good deal of stuff in FF7 that could be elaborated on and fleshed out.

Like, I’m honestly hoping the first installment takes place entirely in Midgar and just focusing on life in the slums there. Maybe some of the other members of Avalanche getting more characterization, which from the trailers seems like that might be a thing.

It can go either way. It might be full of filler that doesn’t add anything, or they might really be able to flesh things out and make the world of FF7 that much better.

Well, the people who were mad about it already probably made their minds in the first announcement, clarifying it twice won’t really change anything for them. I’m glad SE is putting their foot down and saying that if you want it, this is how it’s going to be and that’s that.

…and then the people who complained about it buy it anyway. By the way gents, if you don’t like episodic releases, wait until they’re all out and buy them all at once like a single game.

  18. Arenegeth

What did he clarify exactly? The scale of the game was their excuse for going multi-part since we first heard about it, reiterating it doesn’t clarify anything.

What most people would like to know, is if this is gonna be Starcraft II or The Walking Dead.

Either way, what I find upsetting, is that in 2015, after so many bad business practices and lies, some gamers are still falling for a Publisher’s word, because right now we got nothing more than that. I mean even if true and they’re not just exaggerating on the scale, they could have just taken more development time and released it all at once.

But beyond that, I’m worried they plan on ‘expanding’ on the first game too much in order to ‘surprise’ us (read: milk us), probably end up misrepresenting characters and retconning stuff.

For the record, I was against this remake from day 2, I got excited when the PS3 Tech Demo showed up like everybody else, but quickly wised up.

Still, I may be wrong and this may turn out to be the greatest thing ever, but regardless, I’m sure a lot of gamers will be pre-ordering the three limited editions (per part) and buying the season passes anyway, Nostalgia is a helluva drug.

About 30% of the original game was filler…

Just think about it. You didn’t have to get either Yuffie and Vincent nor fight the weapons to finish the game. Most of the game had parts that you didn’t absolutely have to go through to get past them.

Discs 2 and 3 were fairly short for this reason if you were just following the story.

I don’t get this idea that you can’t make a game that’s large in scope these days. They’re basically saying that what was normal in 1997 isn’t doable today which is frankly, not true. It isn’t like RPGs or games in general with grand scales just died over the last 18 years or something.

Having pre-rendered backgrounds for environments is a lot easiier than having fully rendered 3D environments. And Square has always pushed their games graphically, so you can’t expect them to back off in that department.

They also had the whole “overworld” concept back then, which has fallen out of favor, as people want a consistent world.

Most RPGs nowadays tend to have much smaller scopes. Like, say, The Witcher 3 where the game takes place in a relatively small geographical area. FFVII encompasses a planet. You’d have to make some serious cuts to get a singular game out of it.

RPGs generally went down in scope but made up for it with density. I think they’re trying to achieve a balance between the two. They want to keep the scope, but they don’t want environments to feel empty, and they also don’t want to cut out anything.

I’m OK with this so long as the volume of content reflects what he’s saying. If the world they’re making is really so massive that it’ll never fit into one game, then multiple games is fine. On the other hand, I don’t want to shell out for five or six twenty hour games. If each game is the size and length of a normal JRPG, then I’ll be happy.

They’re splitting one game in 3.
No matter how you look at it making it work is going to be a challenge, and the chances of something not working well are big, they have to make sure every game feels complete and has a proper start and ending, they have to somehow make the connections between the early parts and later parts fit despite the game now being split.

There will be new content that has to live up to the original, and they have to make sure the pacing of the story doesn’t break due to modifying it so much.

They had to sell us on their product.when is the last time you heard of one game on multiple discs all at once, no dlc. Not for years and probably never again. We are all hooked on the product, unlike the first release that took years to become a real classic, most people are already in line to buy this one. The mini games alone included chocobo racing, motorcycle escape, snowboarding, chocobo breeding, a mountain climbing portion plus some other mini games I can’t remember.

Xenoblade looks like ass and the environments tend to be most of the time open fields or environments where the same assets can be reused. With the level of fidelity and world size Square usually wants I do think it’s more so they don’t go bankrupt. Plus they do have to rebuild the game from scratch since the old assets are useless.
Final Fanatsy VII cost a pretty penny (counting inflation it’s the 3rd most expensive game of all time) and remaking it from scratch is going to have an exponentially higher cost.

You know what? Yoshinori isn’t wrong. Back in the PSX era and maybe even now, you couldn’t fit all the content FF7 had on one disc.

Which is why the original FF7 came with three discs.

I think this statement damns Square even more. They could make the whole game in a single title, rather than spacing out the three discs as standalone games. Fact is, Square knows fans want this remake, and there’s more money to be made in spacing the games out in a psuedo-trilogy. There’s no reason they can’t release the full FF7 on multiple discs, they just want to nickel and dime fans gullible enough to fall for this. Although the saddest thing is fans will likely eat it up all the same.

I refuse to buy this game. I’m not so stupid that I’d buy the same game chopped up into three separate purchases. I’d rather add to 700 hours I spent in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. A game, I will stress, I only had to buy once.

Are people really this stupid down in the comments? “Well just release it on 3 discs, durrrrrrr.” You honestly think that when he talks about the scale of the game, the only influence for the multi-episode format is the sheer volume of the data and not the massive development time and cost to remake a game that was the most expensive one ever made at the time back in 1997? You can’t be this ignorant of the scale and cost of remaking and possibly expanding this title to honestly think its just a disc size issue.

And this isn’t even me just fangirling out. Accuse them of gold-digging all ya want, I’m wont dispute you on that one cause, realistically, they are. I’m bracing myself for the $20 “Revive Aeris” DLC. But don’t be idiots and try to make it sound like just slapping it on to a 3 disc set could solve all the problems here.

People call this milking, but I have to disagree.

The episodic format in addition to having CyberConnect2 help with development just says to me that Square wants something playable released to the public as soon as possible. Not for money, but for the sake of keeping the good momentum going from the announcement alone. We already have Final Fantasy XV with no release date, Kingdom Hearts III with no release date, Kingdom Hearts 2.8 with no release date, and Final Fantasy VII didn’t need to add to that list. They’re doing what they should do, which is create smaller, cheaper projects that are guaranteed to sell.

If you notice, there’s no footage of anything outside of Midgar. I think it’s safe to assume that the first chapter ends after you leave the city. That’s a good chunk of the game right there. This is all speculation, of course, but I’d say each of the original discs could be told in two chapters. I can see this decision happening naturally as they recreate the city and realize just how massive this entire project is. Everything about this “remake” points to getting a playable piece out quickly. That’s why it’s a re-imagining, not a remake. They can now take liberties, remove segments, change segments, streamline the story and gameplay, and get something out much faster.

Oh, it’s such BS, though. In recent times they’ve been failing massively as a developer and a publisher. If you’re a game company and you’re having trouble getting finished games on shelves without screwing around like this, you must have serious problems. It’s going to affect their ability to execute their “grand vision”, obviously, so maybe squenix should just get their shit in order beforehand so they can do it right?

I’m not forcing the devs or anyone to change their game. They can keep ignoring me and everyone else that agrees with me. Besides that, not only am I right, they’re the ones that actually censored the game.

Also, you should stop being such a clod. Who’s relevant in this discussion isn’t decided by a fucking retard like you.

Wait you do mean Xenoblade Chrnicles or Xenoblade Chronicles X?
The Wii one doesn’t look good from a technical stantpoint, it has good character design but sorry, the models from the main characters from Final Fantasy X are better on a polygon and texture resolution standpoint. Aesthetically Xenoblade Chronicles is better and there’s some nice parts, I do love the swamp at night, but on a technical standpoint it does look like a PS2 game.
I do remember plenty of articles and discussion on the topic, so while I don’t completely think that, it’s a common belief among people. Still the main point is that Xenoblade cost peanuts compared to FF7 and the graphical fidelity is a huge factor.

“You’re denying someone (yourself) access to an excellent piece of art because of an ideology.”

Ok, so what? Do you think that changes that a boycott is not censorship? Of course it won’t.

You don’t even know for sure if I would have enjoyed the game in it’s current censored form, not like that matters. Sometimes it’s just better to support both the short and long run.

But hey, be my guest, try and prove your stance.

“Why is is that when I come to NicheGamer’s comment section, I always see arguments nearly identical to the headcases in /r/GamerGhazi, but applied to the polar opposite end of the spectrum? It’s uncanny.”

I think your brain is frying up, you have no argument and you’re trying to commit a guilt by association to save your shiny golden ass, after all, where would you stick your head anymore?

I mean, who the fuck doesn’t know that some arguments can’t be used in a X, Y context but some can?

    Oh, that’s you.

“Also, why is a fucking retard like you more qualified to decide what’s relevant than a fucking retard like me?”

First of, because I am not retarded like you are. Besides that, I’m following logic.

The illogical part is that you’re begging the question, you suppose that I am not relevant to this discussion without having proven why.

Second of, you can never know if someone in a boycott would have or not bought the game in the first place, you asinine fuck, that’s the unsound part. It’s not provable.

So, what will you do? Will you start being entertaining anytime soon or…?

……. This is what I think of the episodic series; it’s a fan trap to rake in ALL OF THE MONEY POSSIBLE!!!!! It’s like, HERE’S DISK 1! THAT WILL BE $59.99 (American Price of a new AAA title, I don’t know how it is elsewhere) YOU BEAT IT ALREADY?! WELL, YOU BETTER WAIT UNTIL WE RELEASE DISK 2 AT AN ADDITIONAL $59.99, OR BETTER YET, PRE-ORDER FOR THE SPECIAL CLOUD ADDITION AND GET ALL 4 DISKS FOR $200 AS THEY RELEASE!!!

It’s basically the same formula used by Telltale Games and pisses me off that the entire idea started off this way. Force players to pay one large price tag for all episodes or pay for a chunk to see if you like and either waste the same amount of money to buy all the episodes individually or buy the entire season without the ability to pass off the episode you just played to a family member or friend.

  103. C4
    C4
    December 11, 2015 at 7:45 pm

    Yeah.

On the other hand FF7 is one of the worst games I can think of to split into multiple installments. It’s not the moment you leave Midgar that’s impressive. It’s that you continue doing what you do next. This goes for most potential “end of chapter x” situations in the game.

At this point we have no idea if the release will be one game with a few (large) DLC packages or 20 “episodes” so I wouldn’t just brush these concerns away. So even if you’re 100% okay with multi-series releases there are still valid concerns and questions.

It doesn’t matter where you live, some portion of the money you pay for gas is ending up in the coffers of someone in the middle east.

Yes, like funding a company or country isn’t funding everything done by that country or company as you just said, funding a censored game isn’t funding censorship. The child FINALLY got it! Holy shit we’ve made a breakthrough here today ladies and gentlemen!

Are you trying to change the subject? They’re still not equivalent. You paid specifically for a CENSORED game, which means you supported censorship. Look kid I know this is hard for you to grasp, but you did in fact support censorship. Deal with it.

Here let’s make this easy for you. If you buy filtered water, then claim you don’t support the company’s decision to filter the water–you still supported it by paying for it. Ergo you supported filtered water. Simple enough right? You can claim you don’t support it BUT you paid for it. You financially backed said filtered water. No matter how you feel about said filtered water, you still paid for it. It’s the same with Xenoblade. Whether or not you’re against the fact that they censored the game (last I checked you said skin was icky) you still paid for a censored game. You still gave them your financial backing for a censored game, therefore you supported a censored game. Which means you supported censorship–with your wallet.

Ergo you supported filtered water. Simple enough right?”

No, you’re buying water. And if that company is giving political contributions to Donald Trump, does that mean when you buy water you’re supporting Donald Trump?

This is the same shit the SJWs tried to do with Chick-Fil-A if you recall.

No I paid for a video game of a genre I liked, developed by a company. That a second company came in and censored it and got some of my money is not my fault, nor my responsibility, nor my support of all actions ever taken by that company.

Not equivalent. We’re talking specifically about the water not the people around the water. Do I have to make it colors for you to understand?

If you buy green water then you have paid for green water–ergo you’ve supported green water. I don’t care if an elf got the money, or if that elf is going to give the money to Santa Claus. Right now we’re speaking specifically about the product. If you don’t like green water–don’t pay for it.

IE:DON’T SUPPORT CENSORED LOCALIZATIONS (BY FUCKING PAYING FOR THEM) THEN CLAIM YOU DON’T SUPPORT THEM. YOU GOD DAMNED IDIOT.

But that localization company didn’t make the game, or gets much of the money. They don’t go out of business if the game fails. They’re not who I’m supporting.

You can perform “mental gymnastics” to continue to try and claim I’m supporting them, but I’m not.

A small unavoidable amount. They get even less than the platform licenser.

  171. Thanatos2k

So when you purchase any game, you’re supporting censorship, because part of the money went to someone who censors games.

  175. snugdarkly

Still not equivalent. I don’t see why this is so difficult for you but buying a censored game is supporting censorship, and buying an uncensored game is not. As for Sony, no. I haven’t bought anything from them for a while but even if I had that’s not directly supporting censorship. You pay for uncensored games, and leave the censored ones to rot.

    Ya bloody crackpot.

Doesn’t matter if a particular game is censored or not, the money still goes to the same place – companies that censor games. So you shouldn’t be able to buy anything from Nintendo ever again by your own retard logic.

Wait are you basing your entire argument on the fact that no one knows an exact percentage? Do you really need me to prove to you that games are censored when you were the one who said you wouldn’t be able to buy any games if you went out of your way to not support censorship? Are you just taking this argument in circles until you find something you can win?

Most of the games also don’t have anything offensive to censor. What are they going to do? Remove Mario’s mustache? It’s the games that require censorship (IE are too offensive) that need to be worried about, not all games silly. And no I’ve already refuted that last part. Try again.

Rated M games are safe unless they’re only rated M for a very specific reason. They won’t censor an M rated game if they can’t accomplish a T rating by doing so, neither can they censor a game that has already been released uncensored elsewhere. Bayonetta was a swell move on Nintendo’s part. For a second I’d actually thought they changed.
