Final Fantasy boss Naoki ‘Yoshi-P’ Yoshida recently talked up the beloved classic Final Fantasy Tactics, teasing its “probably time” the company returns to Ivalice.
Yoshi-P was in attendance at this year’s PAX East to showcase Final Fantasy XVI downloadable content alongside his co-director Takeo Kujiraoka. In an interview, the duo (translated through localization director Michael-Christopher Koji Fox) talked up new Tactics game, though it won’t come for awhile.
While the focus of the interview was of course the aforementioned DLC, the team was asked if they would ever consider using Final Fantasy XVI’s setting as the base for a new Tactics game, as they are similar in premise and style.
All three agreed that XVI might not be the best choice due to its scale. “What would we even call it?” Fox said (via TheGamer). “Final Fantasy 16 Tactics? That’s a lot.”
Yoshida added, “We have a lot of our staff who worked on previous games like Final Fantasy Tactics or Final Fantasy 12, so you’re going to have a lot of that [Tactics] feel because a lot of the same people are on the team.”
“We’re very happy for you to suggest this because we’re all fans, but if we were going to make this, we wouldn’t want to do the same story that turns out to be a different story,” Yoshida said.
The final tease will leave Tactics desperate for more, with Yoshi-P suggesting they’re seriously considering a new title.
“But the series does lend itself well to that kind of storytelling, and we love Tactics as well,” Yoshida said. “It’s probably about time that we do a new one.”
Originally released for the first PlayStation back in 1997, Final Fantasy Tactics was an instant hit and has been considered one of the greatest games ever made, and is the first game set in Square’s popular Ivalice world. It later got remade as Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions.
Two direct spinoff sequels, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift, were released back in 2003 and 2007, respectively. The world of Ivalice even inspired lots of content in their beloved MMO, Final Fantasy XIV.
