Xelan Force AE

Japanese developer PiXEL has announced Xelan Force AE, a new upgraded re-release of their throwback vertical shoot ’em up game.

Xelan Force AE is in development for Windows PC (via Steam), Nintendo Switch, and PS5 with a release set for 2026. The game will get a physical release in Japan, too, which includes an 8-bit version of the original Xelan Force.

The original Xelan Force has been available for Windows PC (via Steam) and Switch (via the eShop) since February 2024.

Here’s a rundown on the game, plus a new trailer:

Xelan Force, the 8-bit-style vertical scrolling shooter released in 2024 to critical acclaim.

“An 8-bit console game released in the 80s makes a fresh comeback in arcades during the 90s!” This new chapter of Xelan Force brings that “what if” scenario to life.

Featuring a resolution of approximately 320×224, all pixel art has been completely redrawn, with a significant increase in animation patterns. Rather than using vector-based smooth scaling and rotation, raster-style effects are employed to recreate the atmosphere of the era.

Numerous new characters also make their appearance. The sound, packed with the charm of FM synthesis, is once again handled by Yasuhiro Inazawa, continuing from Xelan Force.
