Now that Microsoft has completed their merger with Activision Blizzard, the Xbox branch of their behemoth company has finally topped Sony’s PlayStation.
While Sony continues to sell lots of PS5 consoles alongside Nintendo’s more popular Switch, Xbox hardware sales have been sluggish. With all of Activision Blizzard now, though, Xbox is set to come out on top with a combined overall revenue of $10.4 billion.
In comparison, Sony’s PlayStation earned roughly $8 billion in revenue – all of which come from the months ranging from January through June of this year, the first half of 2023 (via analyst Newzoo). Chinese giant Tencent dwarfs both, however, with its $15.4 billion in revenue.
The big buyout, first announced back in January 2022 for nearly $69 billion, was delayed repeatedly amidst regulators and competitors evaluating the deal.
It’s worth noting, however, that due to even more delays Microsoft’s buyout of Activision Blizzard wasn’t fully completed until October of this year. Thus, sales from earlier this year technically doesn’t fall under the companies being one entity.
Regardless, both Xbox and Activision Blizzard revenue, when looking at ongoing trends in the market, will both combined top PlayStation revenue. Perhaps this is why the FTC has kept trying to block the merger, even after it closed.
