A new sales report confirmed the Xbox Series X|S has already outsold the Xbox One in Japan.
The new report (via Famitsu) confirms over 260,504 Xbox Series X|S units have been sold thus far, while Xbox One sold roughly 114,831 in its entire lifetime. The Xbox Series has been selling surprisingly well in Japan compared to its predecessor, even outselling the PlayStation 5 some weeks.
This may not show a turning of the tide in Japan towards Microsoft though, rather, it may be a symptom of production and stock shortages affecting Sony’s Playstation 5 – which has continued to beat the Xbox in total numbers for the Japanese market.
To date, the Playstation 5 has sold 1.7 million units in Japan compared to the Xbox Series X|S, which as mentioned above sold over 260,000 units. This does not mean that Xbox is not improving its marketshare in the country though, these sales numbers are a vast improvement over the previous sales.
Both consoles’ sales numbers have been dwarfed by the Nintendo Switch, which has become the dominant system in Japan by leaps and bounds. Over 25 million Switch consoles have been sold in Japan since the console’s launch in 2017.
