Twitter is making more changes – the company killed off free API access and Microsoft isn’t happy as they’ve removed Twitter from their platforms.

Now, Xbox owners are unable to share screenshots and game clips directly to Twitter from an Xbox console or the Game Bar on Windows. Users instead can only share media from the Xbox app, on Android and iOS.

Microsoft dropping Twitter support comes not long after Twitter boss Elon Musk pulled the plug on legacy verified badges on the platform, despite verified badge-havers screaming about it for weeks (they still are).

Furthermore, Microsoft noted as of April 25th users will no longer be able to access their Twitter account(s), create or manage tweet drafts, view past tweeks and engagement, or schedule tweets through their own in-house social media management tools.

Musk previously confirmed Twitter would be paywalling large-scale API access for companies and organiztions, which Microsoft is now reportedly unwilling to fork up.

Instead, the company is still letting users access and share social media content on competitors Instagram and LinkedIn (the latter of which they own, too).

When reports of Microsoft dropping Twitter came up, Musk was quick to respond to the story by saying Microsoft “trained illegally using Twitter. Lawsuit time.”

Musk is naturally talking about ChatGPT, the text-generating artificial intelligence that Microsoft is a large donor for and maintains broad control over.

When asked what his long term plan could be with API access, Musk said he’s “open to ideas, but ripping off the Twitter database, demonetizing it (removing ads) and then selling our data to others isn’t a winning solution.”
