As many of my family and friends in the military or who have served in the military can attest – video games are a great way for folks in the service to unwind from the stress of defending our nation.

Coming from this, Microsoft has signed a deal with the US Department of Veterans Affairs to bring Xbox Adaptive Controllers to 22 VA rehab centers across the country, in an effort to help wounded warriors recoup while they return to civilian life.

“This partnership is another step toward achieving VA’s strategic goals of providing excellent customer experiences and business transformation,” VA Secretary Robert Wilkie said.

The controllers, combined with Xbox consoles, various games, and other “adaptive gaming equipment,” are set up to encourage and promote therapeutic physical activities and “greater participation in social and recreational activities.” VA staff will help wounded warriors and “engage with” veterans using the hardware, after which they’ll send feedback to Microsoft.

Alongside the 22 VA rehab centers, the equipment will also be made available for use at events hosted by the VA’s Office of National Veterans Sports Programs and Special Events, which include the National Veterans Wheelchair Games.
