Microsoft has announced the Xbox 360 Marketplace has officially shut down today, on July 29th, nearly twenty years after it first went online.
While the games, updates, and purchases from the Xbox 360 Marketplace will remain available to users, the online functionality of the store has been removed and the online webstore has also been shuttered. All old game links now redirect to the modern Xbox store.
A Heritage Collection of classic Xbox 360 games had been on sale about two months ago. Former director of programming for Xbox Live from 2005 until 2023 Larry Hryb talked up the iconic storefront closing down.
“Almost 19 years on, all good things must come to an end,” Hryb said. “We are in the final 24 hours (or so) of the Xbox 360 Marketplace.”
He added, “It was my pleasure sharing all the thousands of marketplace sales and updates I’ve given over the years. Thank for having fun, playing fair and filing feedback.”
Microsoft promised that some games which are Xbox 360 exclusive will have backwards compatibility on the Xbox One and Series X. However, it’s worth noting that dozens of digital-only, Xbox 360-only games have now been lost forever (if you didn’t own them before).
