We’ve learned (via the PlayStation Blog Japan) that worldwide sales for PlayStation 4 have surpassed 30.2 million units.
The home console has sold over 30.2 million units as of November 22nd, Sony Computer Entertainment said in a press release. The console is reportedly showing the strongest and quickest growth in PlayStation hardware history.
“We are sincerely grateful that gamers across the globe have continued to choose PS4 as the best place to play since launch two years ago,” said Andrew House, President and Global CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. “We are committed to bringing engaging games and entertainment services to users worldwide. Thanks to the support of our partners, PS4 continues to be the premier platform for game and interactive entertainment innovation.”
PlayStation 4 first launched back on November 15th, 2013 in North America, and is now available in 124 countries.

November 25, 2015 at 11:03 amI think a lot of the PS4’s initial steam came from Microsoft’s utter mishandling of the X1 – that’s at least what pushed me firmly into the Sony camp after being a 360 user last gen. Shame Nintendo is a complete non-entity at this point, give me two good reasons (Metroid/F-Zero) and I’d jump straight back into their arms.

November 25, 2015 at 11:15 amNah, can’t see it happening; the market has changed too much since then.
There’s been the death of third party exclusives as we knew them, not having the insane PSX > PS2 momentum, mid- and lower budget games mostly having become a PC-only/first affair, loss of offering an innovative new media format, as well as losing most of the casual market to Nintendo and subsequenly Apple/Google.
It’ll end up selling the most out of the current three consoles, sure, but that kind of insane market domination is a thing of the past. Would even argue that the only reason it’s been doing well is because MS and Nintendo completely botched their consoles (although with MS it was mostly their reveal, and they eventually recovered from that adequately enough).
Well, that coupled with the fact that we now have a generation of gamers that have been conditioned to buy early (and at a high price) without much of a care beyond the usual blockbuster multiplats.
Mr0303
November 25, 2015 at 11:20 amOh, I agree. I doubt any console can repeat the success of the PS2. Another factor was that it was one of the cheapest DVD players out there.
I was talking more about the enormous lead the PS4 had, which usually leads to more games produced for it.
Master Bating
November 25, 2015 at 11:30 amMultiplats, all of them.
PC + Vita + 3DS is the way to go this gen.
Mr0303
November 25, 2015 at 11:36 amThat is factually incorrect. Of those about 30 are PS4 exclusives, 100 Sony exclusives and 200 are console exclusives.
Also a game being multiplatform doesn’t make it any less of a game.
Nagato
November 25, 2015 at 11:45 amWith the direction the market has been going, I’d argue that PC + NX + Mobile will ultimately be the way to go, given the likelihood of Nintendo’s console/handheld platform adopting whatever games would previously have been made for PSP/Vita before.
Of course, that’s dependent on Nintendo not continuing to mess things up as far as third parties go, as well as getting their own first party stable in order as far as censorship and forgotten franchises such as Metroid, F-Zero and Golden Sun go.

November 25, 2015 at 12:33 pmI still have no interest in owning a PS4 as my PC takes care of all my gaming needs but I do respect how Sony turned the failure of the PS3 around to the more successful PS4. I wonder will Nintendo do the same with the NX?

November 25, 2015 at 1:07 pmI’d never trust nintendo with a system after the Wii U.

November 25, 2015 at 1:13 pmAAA & Indie trash and multiplatform titles available in other Sony consoles don’t count.
I can only see Yakuza 6, Bloodborne, Gravity Daze 2, Nep VIII, Valkyrie Azure (arguably DoAX3 and SK: EV too despite them being multiplatforms) and that’s pretty weak coming for a four year-old system.
Feniks
November 25, 2015 at 1:14 pmNintendo doesn’t have the third party games people want to play so they were always gonna end up at the bottom.
MS just destroyed all their good will. TV nonsense and American sport deals were just so retarded- maybe next gen. But they basically have to start over again.

November 25, 2015 at 1:17 pmWell if you can’t afford or don’t want a high end PC the PS4 is the way to go this gen.

November 25, 2015 at 1:37 pmYou don’t even need to spend a huge load of money on a configuration to play (japanese) video games on PC. You can get a good build for around the price of a PS4.

November 25, 2015 at 2:08 pmMe speculating is shiling? How so?

Mr0303
November 25, 2015 at 2:14 pmMore expensive? As far as I can tell the multiplatform games are the same price across the same generation consoles. The older console versions are about 10$ cheaper, but that is expected.
Even so this doesn’t change the fact that these multiplatform games are available for the system and some of them are quite good.

November 25, 2015 at 2:20 pmWhere the hell are you pulling these numbers?
British_Otaku
November 25, 2015 at 2:26 pmI don’t think that’s an argument at all.
PS4 being expensive: I’ve noticed PS4 versions being more expensive, but I’ve also noticed them being the definitive versions of many games (on console anyway – I know some ports from Last Gen to now are terrible too). Would you dismiss the PS2’s library because it might be cheaper on the Xbox or GameCbue?
Online costing money: It does, but it costs money on all platforms but the Wii U, 3DS, Vita and PC. If we compared things on a game by game basis with the assumption that you had those platforms and didn’t have a subscription. Maybe you’ll be able to comment.
Personally, I’d rather buy a game where I don’t have to pay for an online subscription to play myself, but if I only had a PS4…
I’d stay offline. >_>

November 25, 2015 at 2:44 pmThe list needs to be edited. For one, quite a few games are listed as console exclusive despite the contrary (one glaring one I saw was Magicka 2). And some games as Sony Exclusive (Darkest Dungeon).
I also think the list is misleading, since it counts all those Japan-only games that’ll never see the light of day in English, but that’s not exactly here nor there.
Ooh, found another hilarious one: Day of the Tentacle Special Edition as a console exclusive. C’mon now. There’s a reason why wikipedia can’t be used as a source for any serious document.

I think it is enough to disprove the no games or multiplatform only titles.
Antoinant
November 25, 2015 at 3:26 pmThe proof is that Sony don’t need quality games to sell a system for millions of units.
Ubrokemygrill?
November 25, 2015 at 3:28 pmYou’re missing the point. The only reason to own a console is for the exclusives, of which PS4 is severely lacking right now. It’s only doing well because of marketing. For people that like games, Vita and 3DS are the best “consoles” this generation and those are handheld. Sony pushed this gen with marketing instead of letting its quality speak for itself which is incredibly depressing.
Antoinant
November 25, 2015 at 3:36 pm“Would you dismiss the PS2’s library because it might be cheaper on the Xbox or GameCube?”
Back then, the PS2 and Gamecube had many exclusives. Won’t say anything about the Xbox because I never owned it (despite I always wanted to play Jet Set Radio Future).
Why would I spend more money on a system and games that cost more while it’s cheaper elsewhere?
Siveon
November 25, 2015 at 3:37 pmI don’t expect you to. However, for Wikipedia anyway, quick information = false information. This should be important when you want to stress facts.
We all know that the PS4 has games and exclusives, like any major platform would, so the list isn’t necessary.
I don’t believe there is a reliable list out there to reference. So, don’t bother. Use your own knowledge if need be.
Mr0303
November 25, 2015 at 4:05 pmIt doesn’t seem like we all know this obvious information.
A list is better than no list – a couple of out of date games on it don’t disprove the general notion. I can compile my own, but then I would still be blamed for making up statistics.
Mr0303
November 25, 2015 at 4:30 pmThe only reason to own a console would be exclusives? Why? Can’t I play multiplatform games on it?
There are quality titles on the system, maybe nothing for you, but the numbers speak for themselves.
Ubrokemygrill?
November 25, 2015 at 5:16 pmThe numbers scream idiots buying a gimped system with paid online because it was marketed to them. If you want multiplats you should be playing them on pc. Variable performance and no paid online. There are quality titles on the system but so few that I don’t know anyone that can justify the price of a ps4 right now, especially when they have a decent PC. If you bought a ps4 for multiplats I have bad news.
Mr0303
November 25, 2015 at 5:23 pmI’m sure every single one of those 30 million is an idiot who bought a system with nothing to play on it. You are obviously smarter than all of them.
I don’t have a gaming PC and prefer to play on console, so multiplats are a selling point. Not to mention that quite a few games like GTAV come years late or others that run better on consoles like MKX or Arkham Knight.
So what are the bad news you were talking about?

November 25, 2015 at 5:35 pmI am smarter than all of them, because I didn’t waste the money on a no games box. I will admit next year looks decent for ps4. November 25, 2015 at 5:46 pmAgain – I play whatever I want. Quantity doesn’t equal quality which if I’m not mistaken was your initial argument for the PS4 numbers.
Ubrokemygrill?
November 25, 2015 at 5:49 pmThe analogy has flown way over your head. I can prove it right here. Bloodborne. That’s it. The only reason to own a ps4 right this minute. I can’t imagine the salt if Bloodborne came to pc. I want it to just for that reason.
Mr0303
November 25, 2015 at 5:55 pmYou are labeling 30 million people as idiots who don’t know what they like. Seems pretty closed minded to me.
OK, that is your preference. I bought it for Infamous Second Son. We have two reasons now. Joe Average bought it to play FIFA with his friends. 3 reasons. Do I need to go on? People buy consoles for different reasons, but in the end they want to enjoy themselves which justifies their purchase.
Mr0303
November 25, 2015 at 5:57 pmBeing right and eating pancakes is a pretty good situation to be in.
Ubrokemygrill?
November 25, 2015 at 6:02 pmI’m labeling 30 million people as idiots that made a misguided purchase. Joe Average didn’t need a ps4 for FIFA when the newer versions are still on ps3.
>Do I need to go on?
Please do.
>People buy consoles for different reasons
The only reason to have a console is for games. Games exclusive to that console. This reminds me of all the people I knew that had a ps2 simply because it was a cheap DVD player.
Ubrokemygrill?
November 25, 2015 at 6:11 pmI never claimed quantity is quality. Every system is bloated with trash games, but when your system has so few worthwhile exclusives on it after years of heavy marketing you need to stop and wonder what SONY is spending all of their cash on. Hint: It’s not games.
Mr0303
November 25, 2015 at 6:11 pm“All people who buy vanilla ice cream are idiots.”
Joe Average needs to buy a PS4 because Battlefront isn’t on PS3. Neither is the newest COD. Neither is MKX, neither is Arkham Knight, Need for Speed or Fallout 4.
People have different tastes – is that such a hard concept to grasp?
Mr0303
November 25, 2015 at 6:15 pmI don’t need a game to be exclusive to enjoy it. Plus I’ve played enough exclusive games to justify my purchase. If there are no games that you like on the system, well, that is your problem really.
Ubrokemygrill?
November 25, 2015 at 6:21 pm>Battlefront
On PC, with a much better control scheme. Unless you can use mouse + keyboard on the PS4 version. Still not worth a PS4 as it would run better on PC anyway.
>newest COD
On PC, see above
>MKX
PC
>Arkham Knight
P…. Oh wait the devs have shown they can’t code themselves out of a paper bag. If you have to get the worst Arkham game, the console version is better.
>Need for Speed
No comment on how good it is.
>Fallout 4
Doesn’t hold a candle to Fallout: New Vegas or older bethesda games. At least on PC it is moddable to be somewhat playable.
All people who buy ONLY vanilla ice cream are idiots.
As for your ice cream analogy, buying a ps4 is the equivalent of getting a scoop of vanilla in your bare hands with no cup or spoon. It costs extra every month you want to use it, and you have to wait years for the cup, cone and sprinkles.
I’ve stated this multiple times. Multiplats are a poor reason to get a piece of gimped hardware with an online use cost. Exclusives for the PS4 look better and better as time goes on but it still has very little going for it right now.
Ubrokemygrill?
November 25, 2015 at 6:25 pmIt’s the system’s problem for having a gimped library with games I can just get on my PC.
Mr0303
November 25, 2015 at 6:36 pmSo what if people don’t want to play on PC or don’t have a PC that runs those games properly?
What if they want to have one system that runs the multiplats and the exclusives?
Consoles improve over time? Shock an horror! How dare they! They should have all the features and all the games from the get go. There is something called early adopters. They want to get the new system right away to try out the new hardware. This is how all consoles work. And if 30 mil. people bought that ice cream there must be something good about it. The guy in the corner screaming that they mustn’t buy it because the mango one is better may have some issues.
The online use cost is not mandatory and it also comes along with one of the best services in gaming.
There is nothing on the system for you – fair enough, but evidently people want it for whatever reason.
Mr0303
November 25, 2015 at 6:38 pmI’m sure the system is really having a problem with you not buying it.
Ubrokemygrill?
November 25, 2015 at 6:48 pm“Consoles improve over time? Shock and horror!”
Paid online is not an improvement, it’s a downgrade.
>What if they want to have one system that runs the multiplats and the exclusives?
Then don’t get the weakest system.
>And if 30 mil. people bought that ice cream there must be something good about it.
Quantity does not equal quality. You even said it yourself, proletariat.
>The guy in the corner screaming that they mustn’t buy it because the mango one is better may have some issues.
I’m not screaming in the corner with mango ice cream. I’m pointing out obvious flaws and fair criticism of the vanilla ice cream. Seeing as the vanilla was marketed with millions and millions of dollars idiots will gobble it up because if it’s advertised as the best it must be, right?
>There is nothing on the system for you – fair enough, but evidently people want it for whatever reason.
Even you can’t give me a good reason to own one right now, other than games and services I can get elsewhere without a monthly upkeep to play my games online.

November 25, 2015 at 6:49 pm“So what if people don’t want to play on PC or don’t have a PC that runs those games properly?”
Either upgrade your machine or build it yourself.
“What if they want to have one system that runs the multiplats and the exclusives?”
PC is best system for that. Being an idort and not some loyal faggot (to a particular company) works even better too.
“They should have all the features and all the games from the get go.”
“HOW DARE YOU HAVING STANDARDS”
Not to mention consoles from the PS2/Gamecube gen used to have games right from the start. Features like paid online, forced social media, no retro-compatibility aren’t upgrades.
“The online use cost is not mandatory and it also comes along with one of the best services in gaming.”
Do i have to remind you all the security holes from Sony servers?
Ubrokemygrill?
November 25, 2015 at 7:04 pmSony would love my money. They also just screwed up and charged my brother for 10 years of PSN and wanted to refund to his PSN wallet. Great service there.
Mr0303
November 25, 2015 at 7:05 pmThe sprinkles in your analogy are more games. It is logical that the system gets better with a richer library as time progresses.
PS4 is not the weakest system. They are comparable with the One.
I said that there must be something good about it, otherwise people won’t buy it. Plus the number of games purchased for the console shows that people enjoy their system. The Xbox One is marketed just as much if not more, yet people made an informed purchase and got the console they wanted.
Why should I give you any advice how to spend your money? I’m not here to convince you to buy a PS4 or an ice cream you don’t like. Play what you want – this is the free market of the gaming industry, comrade.
Mr0303
November 25, 2015 at 7:10 pm“Either upgrade your machine or build it yourself.”

PCs don’t have said exclusives, so a person who wants to play them and the multiplats can still justify his purchase. Not everyone has the money to own multiple systems.
