World of Warcraft releases new player housing info, criticizes FFXIV

Warcraft Player Housing

World of Warcraft recently released more information about their upcoming player housing which was announced last year. The new information includes things to expect, but also things not to expect from them when compared to the competition.

The highlights of the post, include an explanation of their “pillars” when it comes to designing this feature. These pillars are part of their philosophy to implement something all fans will enjoy.

  • Boundless Self-Expression
  • Deeply Social
  • Long-Lasting Journey

When they say “Boundless Self-Expression”, Blizzard wants their player housing customization to be thorough and robust enough to allow for plenty of options and personalization. Some fans were worried that the customization would be more like the garrisons in Warlords of Draenor which was pretty barebones.

For “Deeply Social”, players will be able to put their homes in player-run “neighborhoods” either based on their faction, or more personal neighborhoods started by friends and guildmates.

Lastly, they want housing to be a “Long-Lasting Journey”. Blizzard intends for it to be an evergreen feature, saying Housing isn’t something players should expect to “finish”, but instead continually look forward to the next housing release”.

As for other worries, Blizzard also put those to rest with a less-than-subtle jab at Final Fantasy XIV whose housing system has been esoteric and extremely restrictive, despite constantly offering furniture as rewards in-game and on the cash shop, only a handful of players are able to interact with the system.

As a part of our focus on wide adoption, we wanted to ensure that Housing is available to everyone. If you want a house, you can have a house. No exorbitant requirements or high purchase costs, no lotteries, and no onerous upkeep (and if your subscription lapses, don’t worry, your house doesn’t get repossessed!).

The housing market on Final Fantasy XIV is infamous for its exclusivity. Due to the artificial scarcity and demand, houses have to be sold by automated lottery for the opportunity to even buy a vacant lot. Players who don’t sign in and enter their house often enough are also at risk of having the game demolish their lot, and if your subscription lapses? Tough luck.

A release date for Player Housing in World of Warcraft hasn’t been announced, but fans aren’t expecting it until the next expansion Midnight.
