    Suicide by chili dogs.

Seriously though Forces was pretty bad. Maybe get fans to make all your Sonic games?

It’s too early for another Sonic game. We had 2 last year. Maybe they can announce some DLC for Forces.

All I expect is Forces DLC, some info on the IDW comic, and maybe that project plus thing for Mania being a real thing.

It will be a nothing burger like SXSW 2016, at best they might reveal that plus update for Mania if that is actually something of note.
“strong performance of Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces”
They refuse to admit that one of those games bombed and the other singlehandedly got people excited about Sonic again. Instead of having Whitehead and his glorious hair on the panel we get Iizuka and his fucked up teeth.

Forces felt really rushed and it has allot of reused assets, Like how some bosses are obviously copies of other bosses with a different skin.
If they announce a new game they should really give themselves more time so they can actually finish it.

They really need to establish good brand identity with Sonic.

Mario does this well as he can appear in many different types of games without it being confusing for the player. No one bats an eye when Mario can be in a 3D platformer like Odyssey while simultaneously appearing in a SOCOM strategy game like Mario + Rabbids. The different genres that he is placed in are defined enough that everyone understands what kind of Mario game they’re playing before they pick it up.

Sega tries to do it all at once with Sonic and it’s not helping them. His best “pure” 3D outing IMO is still Colors, with Generations being a close second. I love Generations to death and I love the modding community for it even more. The Unleashed project is a great example of how fun the Boost series can be and the graphical engine that powered Generations still holds up quite nicely. Forces by comparison just doesn’t look as good.

The problem with Forces and to a lesser degree Generations is that Sonic is presented 2 or 3 different ways in the same game. I give Generations more of a pass on this because it was meant to be an anniversary celebration of the series while Forces just wanted to recapture that magic. But the problem with releasing a 2D style Sonic in your 3D Sonic game, especially when a bunch of fans made a true 2D game earlier that year to much greater success, is that neither get to benefit from any improvements. They actually both felt quite inadequate compared to Generations.

The fix is simple. And it should be obvious given the success of Mania. Let Whitehead and co. make genuine, 2D Sonic games for you and let Sonic Team make pure, 3D boost games and expand on that formula. Don’t add classic Sonic into your 3D games anymore. Let the two exist separately and continue to refine both of their formulas. They also need to massively dial back the story mode stuff. It’s incredible to me how much more charming and charismatic Sonic can be as a silent sprite, and Mania’s opening animation still gets me every time. I guess you lose the meme-worthy Modern Sonic stuff, but it’s already old if you ask me. Just let Aaron Webber make the memes. He’s actually pretty good at it.

This has been my Sonic rant. Viva la Mania.

If I can have one out there wish, I’d be really happy if they announced a Sonic Adventure remake.

-completely redone from the ground up with current graphics (and have sort of an “Anime-ish” look for the humans, akin to what we had in Sonic X or the Archie comics. not too realistic but not too cartoony),

    – with the story revised and rewritten by Ian Flynn,

    – a fresh, younger team of competent developers working on brand new stage designs. give Knuckles and Amy some platinum-ish combat to make their stages more interesting, have Gamma be a full on Third Person Shooter (a GOOD one) and have NOBODY who worked on Sonic Lost World get near it.

    – and bringing back the Avatar, having it replace Big`s role in the story (maybe he was a guy who got lost in Mystic Ruins and was crashing at Big’s house, he volunteers to go save Froggy due him and Big becoming friends, that way we have no Fishing. and the story remains largely the same), with extended costumization options (in both species and body types).

That’s not even a remake it’s just some loose adaptation that throws out so much shit that it’s an admission that the original wasn’t good to begin with. These games don’t need combat or third person shooting period, Sonic Team would never have anything that resembled platinum level and even if they did it would still be out of place and taking focus away from the core of the game.
Humans in Sonic X looked like generic cartoon characters I’m not sure what you’re getting at there, here’s my solution for making humans in Sonic work……………….the only human is Robotnik tada.

My bet is they are going to release a game for PC and PS4 that is just a VR chat that let’s you make your avatar with the Sonic Forces character creator. It’ll be their highest selling game ever, because there is no god.

After seeing the difference between how people received Sonic Mania and the most recent 3D game (so uninspiring that I don’t even remember its name), maybe SEGA is finally getting the picture. Not getting my hope too high, though.

Probably more IDW comic stuff and maybe a movie teaser, at most we’ll get a spin-off. No Mania sequel (maaaybe the rumoured DLC) and definitely not a Sonic Team game, they need to take a while to think about what they’ve done.

The one part I disagree with is dialing back story mode for Modern Sonic. The first true Modern Sonic games were the Adventure games which were very heavily story focused, so getting rid of the story in Modern Sonic would destroy it’s identity. They can’t and shouldn’t dial back the story. They need to write it better and make use of the other characters besides Sonic.

Just because cancer has taken over something doesn’t mean it has to be it’s identity when it can easily be removed especially when the subject would live a healthier life without it. The focus on story is one of the things that made modern Sonic a laughingstock.

that’s just my personal opinion, and I do think it qualifies as a Remake, similarly to how the Final Fantasy 7 Remake is real time combat.

you’re free to disagree with me, our opinions regarding Sonic don’t match and you’re undeniably getting more of the games you like seeing how Mania was a success. But there is a good portion of people who like the games from Adventure era games because of a focus on Story, Multiple gameplay styles.

As I said, we are getting 2D Sonic, no doubt about it. I just hope you don’t find it unreasonable that I want something for me too.

agreed. Personally, I think Modern Sonic needs a soft-reboot, not changing the designs or anything but having them bring in a writer who can craft a consistent world (personally, I think Ian Flynn would be ideal) and go on from there (like, how about keeping that damn moon blown up if it gets blown up).

appearently, they wasted too much time on the Hedgehog Engine 2 and had the smallest development team of every “Boost” game, and none of the level designers of Generations, Colors, and Unleashed. only the director of Lost World and three newbies.

I’m aware of that and I haven’t seen anything to suggested that it has with the current assumption being that it under performed at best, we know Mania performed strongly based off statements they made in their last financial report. I doubt the avatar was driving increased sales when “that” crowd it’s made to appeal to already buys every Sonic game already, Mania would be pulling in new market from those that haven’t cared about the games 90’s along with those that just solid 2D games while Forces pushes market away with it’s poor quality and obviously not being the Generations 2 it hungered for.

Sonic Team itself doesn’t care about that haven’t you seen Iizuka laugh off things like the moon before? Ian wouldn’t be able to do shit about it, he’d just be localizing story concepts from Sonic Team just like the current writers.

    and that’s why I say:

    Iizuka needs to go. quickly.

I don’t think Ian would be relegated to Localizing though, Pontac and Graff were given free reign over the writting of Lost World (let’s not talk about it) and Ian has enough Street cred that I think they’d give him a chance.

Some people’s idea of enjoyment is a five star meal prepared by a expert chef well versed in the history of cooking the other is eating a shit sandwich garnished with nails given to you by hobo who might have been a somebody at some point but known now for making shit sandwiches for the easily conditioned.

There would have to be a massive shift in how holds the reigns of the brand for that ti happen, SOJ has let Iizuka escape after numerous fuckups so in the rare event SOJ decided to do a shakeup Iizuka only goes when he decides to. If I’m SOJ and I’m comparing sales data and budget of Forces and Mania while looking at Iizuka insane claims of Mania being niche it’s a easy call what to do.

You sure are a pleasant person to talk to aren’t you? I’m not saying the gameplay isn’t important too, because of course it is. It’s a video game after all. I’m just saying there isn’t anything wrong with there being a story, because there isn’t. Even if it is a platformer.

It is when it takes time and resources from the actual game part, the focus on having a cinematic story went hand and hand with making the gameplay automated, linear with endless terrible voice acting for the sake of being “cinematic” above being a game. The Shun Nakamura produced (what idiot thought this was a good idea?) Forces tried to have more of a story focus and lo and behold the gameplay is even more automated and linear than Generations on top of bringing back terrible voice acting during gameplay.

If these games were to have any cutscenes they should be fun, energetic and to the point, not endless shot reverse shot scenes where characters just stand around filled with melodrama, exposition and either cringy attempts at being edgy or funny.

  37. TroublesomeKnight
    TroublesomeKnight
    February 4, 2018 at 2:59 am

No. The story had nothing to do with the gameplay being automated or the level design being linear. The gameplay and levels were like that because Sonic Team brought in a bunch of newbie level designers who’d never worked on a Sonic game before and they decided to use an entirely new engine instead of sticking with the one they used for Generations, Colors and Lost World that was clearly inferior. That had nothing to do with the story.
