[UPDATE: All three games, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Punch Out!!!, and the Metroid Prime Trilogy, are priced at £17.99 / €19.99 but will be available for half that during the first week of each title’s release.]
Nintendo has confirmed that Wii games are coming to the Wii U via digital download.
Iwata himself made the announcement this morning during the Nintendo Direct stream.
The games will be available to download right from the Wii U menu. The first games to be distributed include Super Mario Galaxy 2, and it’s actually being made available later this afternoon. Later releases include Punch Out!!! on January 22nd, and the Metroid Prime Trilogy on January 29th.
“Now that we can reproduce Wii disc software on Wii U, we can make these titles available to download,” Iwata said during the announcement. “Some of the Wii games that were compatible with the Wii Classic Controller can be played using only the Wii U GamePad, too.”
