Warren Spector Joins OtherSide Entertainment as Studio Director

OtherSide Entertainment, the folks working on Underworld Ascendant and System Shock 3, have been joined by legendary and veteran game developer Warren Spector.

Spector has left his position at the University of Texas at Austin to join OtherSide Entertainment, full-time, as studio director.

“I’ve loved working with students as Director of the Denius-Sams Gaming Academy in the University of Texas’ Moody College of Communication,” Spector said in a statement.

“But when the opportunity to have a bigger role in bringing Underworld Ascendant to life, as well as playing in the System Shock universe once again, helping to bring these games to a 21st century audience, I just couldn’t say no. Working on System Shock was one of the most fulfilling things I’ve done in my career and it’s hard to describe how much I’m looking forward to sharing with players what SHODAN has been up to since the last game was released.”

It’s worth mentioning that Spector has been working with OtherSide since the beginning as creative advisor, however he has worked with OtherSide founder Paul Neurath on the Ultima Underworld games, Thief: The Dark Project, and of course, the original System Shock.

Still worried about that. It’s a challenging project and they also want a console release which I hope doesn’t limit it.

It’s always nice to see as much of the old band as possible get back together for a sequel, but it’s hard to take big names for granted these days. Has Warren Spector done anything recently aside from Epic Mickey?

Having said that, couldn’t be happier with this move. It’s his chance to make shit happen. Prove he’s still got it.

If he’s involved in such a project, hopefully he will prove that he still has the chops. As much as l respect the guy as a game designer, he has been hitting a few speedbumps with his recent efforts.

Don’t remember if they mentioned SS3 specifically now that you mention it, but if they want SS1 on consoles I doubt they won’t want SS3 on consoles.

Insignificant news regarding a worthless race of insects

All SHODAN aside, excellent news and I can’t wait to finally finish her off

after the shitshow that was epic mickey, I don’t think he has it in him to make decent games anymore. All he’s good for now is telling people that he doesn’t like their games before their games come out.

To be fair, he did apologize for that wolfenstein comment, but it was still in poor taste. Throwing shade on other devs while you’ve not managed to make anything good since Deus ex, which was about 16 years ago, is quite crappy.

All that being said, I hope system shock 3 comes out and is amazing. I’ll gladly jam my foot in my mouth if it means playing another game as good as SS2 was back in the day, today.

Shrug. Warren Spector used to be someone you respect, but he frittered that away.

I hadn’t heard about about his comments towards Wolfensiten but just did and here it is for anyone else curious:
“Did the world really need another Wolfenstein game? Did we need a
generically dark, monochromatic, FPS, kill-the-Nazi-giant-robot game?
Uh. No. The world did not. I am so tired of stuff like this,”
Just amazing that the man who threw 2 more heaps onto the huge pile of shitty western 3D platformers thinks he has the finger on the pulse of what the world wants. Even more hilarious because New Order was hailed as being a breath of fresh air in the FPS genre when it came out. Both his comment there and the latter reasons he spells out in his apology sound similar to a lot of the outrage thrown at Doom at E3 last year.

The whole Epic Mickey saga was such a hilarious failure. Honestly, it was just an excuse for Warren to jerk off to his Disney fetish. He didn’t give a shit about making a good game, to him it was just a fun ride it seemed.

Well, maybe he can give some insight about what made this old games great but I’m not sure if Warren has the chops like he use to. Hopefully he will be more about giving some bits of advice and not completely take over these projects. Fresh blood and talent is needed to keep the industry alive with guidance from the older generation to keep them on a great path.

He also shat on Lollipop Chainsaw, saying it should have never been made because apparently it harms the cause of progress.

Just looked that up too sounds like he’s the exact model of the type that first got massively triggered by Duke Nukem Forever then by the violence at E3 2012 the following year and proceeded to guzzle the koolaid about how these “problematic” games shouldn’t be allowed which essentially filled the hole left by Jack Thompson and his ilk after they feel into irreverence. Absolutely pathetic.
