The Warhammer community is mourning the loss of John Blanche, the legendary artist and art director whose work helped define the look and identity of the franchise for decades. Blanche passed away in 2026 at the age of 78.
For many fans, Warhammer simply wouldn’t look the way it does today without him. His dark, gothic, and unmistakably grim style became the foundation of both Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000, influencing generations of artists, writers, and game developers.
Blanche first began working with Games Workshop in the late 1970s, contributing artwork to White Dwarf magazine and early tabletop releases.
Over the following decades, he became one of the most influential creative voices at the company, eventually serving as art director while producing countless illustrations, cover pieces, and concept designs.
His work helped establish the grimdark atmosphere that Warhammer 40,000 is famous for today. From terrifying depictions of the far future to iconic images of the Emperor of Mankind and the Imperium, Blanche’s art gave the setting its unique personality and visual identity.
