Wargroove Dev Responds to Backlash for Casting White Actors to Play Non-White Characters

Chucklefish has shown off more of the upcoming DLC planned for Wargroove, including the voice actors behind the new characters. It took a bit but users started to notice that white actors were cast to play non-white characters, and since then the developer has clarified the casting decisions.

The developer responded recently noting the actors were cast via an external casting agency so they would avoid having “unconscious biases impact who we hired to work on Wargroove, and to handle the auditions blindly.” This means they chose the actors based on their resume and not who they are, or where they are from.

The developer apologized for how they handled the casting by saying: “We also understand that posting photos of our voice actors besides characters of colour without acknowledgement of the systemic problem of representation in the industry was insensitive and poorly communicated.”

They added that they confirmed to the casting agency that most of the characters were non-white, but “ultimately the decision and responsibility to blind cast was on us, not them.”

The new Double Trouble downloadable content still has no release window, but is certainly looking promising – much like the core game itself.
