Blizzard Entertainment has announced they’re ending new content development for Warcraft Rumble, effectively killing off the free-to-play strategy spinoff game.
Warcraft Rumble is ending new content development less than a year after the spinoff launched for PC. The game was originally released for iOS and Android in November 2023.
“Warcraft Rumble began development nine years ago as a love letter to Azeroth and launched back in 2023, reflecting input from enthusiastic players around the globe and the effort of a passionate team—some of whom continue to support Rumble or other Blizzard games, and some we’ve had to sadly part ways with,” Blizzard said in the update.
“Since launch, Rumble has struggled to find its footing relative to our ambition for its long-term success, and for some time now the team has been listening to player feedback, refocusing in certain areas, and exploring different options. Some of that work showed signs of progress, but ultimately wasn’t enough to put the game on a path to sustainability. ”
The news of Warcraft Rumble being shut down comes not long after parent company Microsoft announced sweeping cuts across their entire global workforce, laying off thousands of staff, as well as numerous projects being reportedly canceled. This is likely another one of their cuts.
It remains to be seen how many staff on Warcraft Rumble have been laid off though senior software engineer AJ Davis said “most of the Warcraft Rumble team” was laid off.
