Warcraft 3 Gets Widescreen Support in New Update

Following the first Public Test Realms that launched for Warcraft III back in August of last year, the classic real-time strategy game has seen a number of updates.

Now, the game has finally gotten widescreen monitor support, adding new “bookends” to the interface and black pillars with the in-game menus, as well as larger game lobbies, more team color variations, and a bunch of bug fixes and balancing tweaks.

To be clear, the game previously supported a stretched widescreen mode that distorted the 16 year old game’s visuals – this update reverts it back to its original aspect ratio but adds the visual filler to help dress things up a bit while retaining its proper scaling.

Blizzard also reset the game’s current ladder rankings, noting that automated tournaments will be returning next week.

The developer also noted this is the last version of the game to support Windows XP, and that replays are not compatible between “major game versions.” This is leading us to think more big updates are planned for the aged RTS.

It’s worth pointing out there are some minor issues with the update like the “Fixed Aspect Ratio” option being temporarily removed from video options and some users being unable to get the game to properly switch between windowed and full-screen modes.

Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne have been available for Windows PC and Mac, via the Blizzard store.
