Warcraft 3 and Diablo II Remasters Aren’t Happening Until the Originals Get Fixed

Following the news that Blizzard was remastering the original StarCraft, many fans naturally began to wonder how many of their other classic games they’d give the glorious high-definition treatment. At this year’s Blizzcon, we’ve learned that further remasters could happen, but unfortunately not until most of those games are fixed.

Peter Stilwell, Blizzard senior producer and part of the new Classic Games team within the company, said (in an interview with PCGamesN) that games like Diablo II and Warcraft III need to have their base games completely fixed before they get the remaster treatment.

He pointed to StarCraft being essentially considered “perfect” when it comes to balancing and features, so it was a natural first choice. Stilwell noted the map pool in Warcraft III is “stale” and that a lot of maps were just regularly thrown out by players, and that the Undead race has only one true build order, among other things that must be re-balanced.

It’s worth mentioning his team did recently put out a large update for Warcraft III over 15 years after the game originally launched, with new Public Test Realms and a roadmap of fixes and balancing changes they’re planning for the classic real-time strategy game. Diablo II, on the other hand, is going to need more work.

The action-RPG has leaderboards that are routinely disrupted by hackers, and that they plan on continuing the PVP seasons but maybe, eventually they’ll crack down enough to where you’ll see real people again. Considering hackers are a major issue with the game, it doesn’t make sense to remaster it before they find a way to stop their influence on the community.

In related news, Blizzard also revealed World of Warcraft Classic, another throwback release for the company alongside the MMORPG’s latest expansion, Battle for Azeroth.

What classic Blizzard games would you like to see fully remastered? Also what kind of features or additions would you like to see in the hypothetical remastered versions? Sound off in the comments below!
