Warcraft 2 remaster leaked ahead of 30th anniversary broadcast

It seems like Blizzard Entertainment is working on a Warcraft 2 remaster in celebration of the series’ upcoming 30th anniversary, according to a new leak.

The new leak comes from users datamining Blizzard’s internal servers where users discovered an entry for “Warcraft II: Remastered Internal Alpha” alongside key artwork and an official logo essentially confirming the remaster is real.

It’s worth noting the legendary sequel to the original Warcraft heavily featured naval themes as sea combat was a big part of its new offerings, and you can see this in the new artwork:

A Warcraft 2 remaster is definitely surprising considering how Blizzard handled their Warcraft III remaster and how they casually said the original games were “just not that fun anymore,” according to Blizzard co-founder Frank Pearce. Since then the original Warcraft and its sequel Warcraft 2 (as well as its Tides of Darkness and Beyond the Dark Portal expansions) have been released on GOG.

Longtime fans of the Warcraft franchise are seemingly hesitant to be excited for a Warcraft 2 remaster because of Blizzard’s poor handling of the Warcraft III Reforged remaster, which became one of the lowest-rated games of all time. The other concern is that the previous remaster/remake literally replaced the original Warcraft III online multiplayer, a thing Blizzard has become infamous for with their online games.

We’ll likely get the full reveal for the Warcraft 2 remaster next week during Blizzard’s Warcraft Direct, on November 13th at 10 AM Pacific / 1 PM Eastern. You can watch it live on YouTube, Twitch, and TikTok.
