Welcome to Waifu Wednesday, Nicchiban’s weekly column where we talk about anime characters, their appeal, and a little on their history.
Today on Waifu Wednesday: Shera L. Greenwood from How Not to Summon a Demon Lord! Shera is one of the three main protagonists of the series and one of the two main love interests for the titular demon lord.
Shera made her first appearance in the ongoing How Not to Summon a Demon Lord light novel series which began in 2014. The series has gone on to spawn a manga series as well as an anime series, the second season of which premiered earlier this year.
A bit of an airhead, Shera was one of the summoners alongside the Pantherian Rem who summoned Diablo into her world. Unbeknownst to both of them, Diablo possessed a ring of magic reflection; this ring caused Rem and Shera to become bound to Diablo, instead of Diablo becoming bound to them as their summoned ally.
Shera fills a role as the clumsy and busty dandere to contrast with Rem’s niche as a flat and serious tsundere. Shera’s body type is the constant topic of jokes from Rem and comments from various NPCs.
However Shera is more than just her appearance and is a competent summoner and skilled archer; not only that but as the princess of the Greenwood elves she can impress others with unexpected social acumen. But these talents only further the “gap moe” when she goes from being a clumsy ditz to serious fighter.
Shera’s a great waifu for fans of busty elves and characters who manage to be serious fighters without falling too hard into tomboyishness.
(On a personal note, I like to think her surname is a reference to the creator of the Forgotten Realms campaign setting Ed Greenwood. But that’s probably me reading too deeply into things.)
