Welcome back to Waifu Wednesday, Nicchiban’s weekly column where we talk about anime characters, their appeal, and a little on their history.
Thanks to popular demand Waifu Wednesday is back on Nicchiban and to celebrate we’re going for one of the most talked about waifus this year: Rebecca from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. If you haven’t seen it yet, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is the surprise hit of 2022. How often do we see a video game get any kind of TV adaptation and it not become an absolute mess?
The series is a prequel to the game Cyberpunk: 2077 and tells the story of David Martinez, a young man who gets embroiled in the criminal underworld of Night City after the death of his mother. He’s introduced to life on the streets by Lucy, a pickpocket and Edgerunner and Rebecca is one of the many people David meets in Night City.
Rebecca might not be the main heroine of the series, but that doesn’t make her any less of a presence on screen. While Lucy might be the mysterious femme fatale in a relationship with our protagonist David Martinez, Rebecca’s presence keeps things lively and teases a little bit of a love triangle between David and Lucy. Where Lucy is serious with moments where she lets her hair down, Rebecca is more in line with the stereotypes of Cyberpunk as a setting. She’s high-tech, laid-back, and lives each day like it’s her last. Her pragmatism and sense of humor quickly endeared her to fans, especially gaining a following among viewers who preferred “loli” characters.
Honestly all the girls in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners are great (my favorite is Sasha); but what makes Rebecca this week’s Waifu Wednesday is that she’s a comic relief characters that manages to represent a more serious philosophy in the Cyberpunk setting. That is to say it’s humor in the face of a grim life on the streets, taking joy where you can get it because otherwise you’d cry.
Also she has massive thighs.
