Welcome back to Waifu Wednesday, Niche Gamer’s column where we talk about characters, their appeal, and a little on their history.

This week’s waifu is Ran Mouri from Detective Conan. Ran is the secondary protagonist of the series and features in almost every episode since the anime began in 1996.

Ran is the girlfriend of series protagonist Shinichi Kudo, she’s a black belt in karate and often runs interference for Conan while he conducts his investigations. Despite never knowing for certain that Conan is Shinichi, her skepticism permits her to give him the benefit of the doubt when he presents his insights.

In the series, Ran is a popular girl and the daughter of Kogoro Mouri, a hapless detective who benefits from Conan’s success more than anyone.

Throughout the series, both Ran and Conan have had several love interests introduced which have tested their loyalty to one another. Throughout the series, Ran has been a constant romantic and believes that Shinichi will return one day.

The manga and anime series are still going strong 20 years later, and VIZ recently announced they’d be releasing the manga with its original name! In the west, the series was called Case Closed due to issues with the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle estate.
