Welcome to Waifu Wednesday, Nicchiban’s weekly column where we talk about anime characters, their appeal, and a little on their history.
Today on Waifu Wednesday: Kobayashi from Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid! Kobayashi is the titular character of the series and exists as the rock that keeps all the other characters together.
Kobayashi is a programmer who works in the offices of Jigokumeguri System Engineering Inc. She encountered Tohru in her dragon form after coming home from a bar drunk and saves her life while thinking the entire encounter is a dream. They then spend the rest of the night drinking and Tohru falls in love with Kobayashi.
Kobayashi is the straight man to most of the other cast, but this has it’s own appeal. She’s a shameless maid otaku and constantly explains that maids are underappreciated and that their work is more impressive and detailed than people think.
Ultimately Kobayashi is relatable as a waifu due to her tomboyishness and her wage-slave cynicism. Viewers of all genders are able to empathize with and appreciate her.
What makes Kobayashi a good waifu is her sloppiness. It makes her feel relatable, attainable, and is also her greatest charm point. Kobayashi’s at her best and cutest when she’s drunk, ranting, and tired from work. Just like the rest of us.
