Welcome to Waifu Wednesday, Nicchiban’s weekly column where we talk about anime characters, their appeal, and a little on their history.

Today on Waifu Wednesday: the titular Galko-chan from Oshiete! Galko-chan (Please Tell Me! Galko-chan) a short form anime that premiered in 2016 from studio Feel. The series is currently ongoing as a manga from creator Kenya Suzuki.

Each episode of Oshiete! Galko-chan follows a group of three friends, Galko (who’s a gyaru or gal, a Japanese fashion/subculture characterized by blonde hair, western fashion, and makeup), Otako (an otaku), and Ojou (a girl from a rich family). Can you tell where the names are going with this? Similar to Komi Can’t Communicate, the characters of the series have simple names that reference their character traits or archetype.

Galko herself defies the stereotype of a popular girl, which “gals” are usually affiliated with. She’s gregarious, outgoing, and able to make friends just about anywhere as evidenced by her closest friends Otako and Ojou.

The series is well known for its short format making it easy to watch, as well as how it addresses topics like women’s health, fashion, and school relationships from an unconventional perspective. The series also addresses curious questions like “do boobs float in water”.

Galko-chan is a great waifu because despite being attractive and being aware of it, she remains humble, friendly, and cheerful. Whether it’s hanging out with her friends or helping the loner boy in class change his look, she doesn’t consider anyone beneath her.
