Welcome back to Waifu Wednesday, Niche Gamer’s column where we talk about characters, their appeal, and a little on their history.
This week’s waifu is Faye Valentine from the 1998 series Cowboy Bebop directed by Shinichiro Watanabe.
Faye is a young woman in her 20s who joins the crew of the Bebop in the middle of the series. She’s originally from Earth but her life was thrown into chaos after an accident in space killed her parents and gravely injured her. As a result, she was placed in suspended animation for 54 years until she could be healed.
The accident also left her with amnesia, and having a mountain of debt shoved onto her by the doctor who revived her, she ended up as an outlaw.
After several incidents with the Bebop, she invites herself onto the crew and adds an unprofessional and chaotic foil to the more in sync Jet Black and Spike Spiegal who were happier to work as a duo.
Faye is a survivor, after waking up 50 years in the future with nothing but debt she’s become jaded and willing to use her body to get what she wants. She ends up forming a bond with Edward, reluctantly helping the young girl join the crew.
Faye is voiced in Japanese by legendary voice actress Megumi Hayashibara, whose past and current works include Ai Haibara from Detective Conan, Jessie from Pokemon, Lina Inverse from Slayers, Ranma Saotome from Ranma 1/2, and more.
