Waifu Wednesday: Hitori Gotou – Bocchi the Rock

Bocchi the Rock

Welcome back to Waifu Wednesday, Nicchiban’s weekly column where we talk about anime characters, their appeal, and a little on their history.

This week’s waifu is Hitori Gotou who’s better known by her nickname “Bocchi” from the series Bocchi the Rock!

Bocchi the Rock is one of the most popular anime from the recent Fall 2022 anime season and follows our titular Bocchi in her first year of high school. She’s been a loner and shut-in throughout middle school and her only social and creative outlet is her love for music. Things take a turn for her when she’s able to join a band with some new friends at school. Bocchi and her excessive shyness are constantly the punchline throughout the series but that’s why many fans of the show love her.

Bocchi the Rock

The series began in 2018 from creator Aki Hamazi and is serialized in Manga Time Kirara MAX. Since K-On was serialized in the monthly magazine Manga Time Kirara Carat and also follows the 4-koma gag format, fans consider Bocchi the Rock to be a spiritual successor to K-On.

Bocchi has been the target of a fan art trend to depict her with a buxom figure in part due to the way the show emphasizes her chest, but also the fact that she constantly wears a zip-up sweatshirt which might be making her seem smaller than she appears.

Bocchi the Rock is available to watch now on Crunchyroll.
