Violet Evergarden: The Movie is available now on the Netflix streaming service.
Violet Evergarden follows the titular character as she works as an Auto Memories Doll. An Auto Memories Doll is a title for women who work as scribes or ghost writers for those who have trouble expressing themselves in writing. The premiere date for the film was announced earlier this year on the official site, along with a trailer for the upcoming premiere.
Violet takes on the job of an Auto Memories Doll after living for war up until now. With no war left to fight, she searches for meaning in the last words her superior officer and handler had for her, confessing that he loved her.
Violet Evergarden the Movie was Kyoto Animation’s first feature length production since Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll. The movie was originally meant to air in April last year, but was delayed due to concerns surrounding the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Violet Evergarden began as a light novel series in 2015 by author Kana Akatsuki with illustrations by Akiko Takase. The series officially concluded after four volumes earlier this year.
The film initially premiered last year in Japanese theaters exclusively. The Netflix release includes the film both subbed and dubbed.
Kyoto Animation, who also published the light novel, created an anime adaptation of Violet Evergarden which aired in 2018.
