Vanilla World of Warcraft Nostalrius Server Returns Under New Name

world of warcraft 04-07-16-1

Following the unfortunate but expected shut down of the vanilla World of Warcraft “Nostalrius” server, fans are still attempting to carry on the decade-plus legacy of the MMORPG.

Now, the Nostalrius team are taking matters into their own hands by releasing the source code and tools to the community. Their first benefactor is another private server that is poised to bring back the Nostalrius server, but under a different name.

“The source code will be first given to an existing Legacy project which we believe to be the most in line with our core values, named Elysium. This server shares the volunteer spirit and passion for the game we had,” reads a statement from Nostalrius admin Viper in a forum post.

“Furthermore, an important part of Nostalrius volunteers are already working there, some under different names. We wish them all the best, and hope that they will become a new home for the reunited Vanilla community. We will continue collaborating closely with them. This collaboration could include additional ‘things’ to share with them if necessary to achieve this goal. In exchange, this server promised to not receive any profit from this activity. They will also have to create the documentation required to install, understand and use the work we did.”

The Elysium developers confirmed the news on Reddit, noting that all current Elysium characters have been saved and frozen pending a transfer to the new system.

“Elysium will now proudly revive and continue what began a year and half ago. We will be gratefully accepting the core and player database of Nostalrius. This means that Nostalrius, exactly as you know it, will be returning,” Suzerain_Elysium wrote.

“Additionally, as many of you know, we have a very large percentage of the Nostalrius staff that has been part of Elysium. Their positions in the staff reach all possible areas such as Administration, Development, Game Masters and Quality Assurance. As of now we have a total of 16 Nostalrius team members (excluding Nostalrius’ administration whom will remain off of the project) and the number is growing. Together we will bring true Legacy servers to the private server community until Blizzard does.”

Blizzard met with Nostalrius team admins and even the team lead of vanilla World of Warcraft himself, Mark Kern – however the discussions seem to have fallen on deaf ears. For what it’s worth, Blizzard does seem keen on not ruling out “Pristine”, vanilla servers.

The Elysium team make a bold promise: “Nostalrius, exactly as you know it, will be returning.”

…As the Activision lawyers sigh and pull another sheet from their stack of preprinted C&Ds.

You think you want it…but you don’t.
Stupid Blizzard could’ve made so much money off of this.

It sucks that Blizz is being so silent, as if to wait it out. . . but what makes me hate modern Blizzard, is they have the stones to tell customers that they don’t know what they want.

Well I have news for them. If I don’t know what I want, then surely hacks who, from what I could see from the last time I actively kept up, only know how to write one story and reskin it both across narrative and interactive genres. With every new retcon, I mean expansion I find ways in which the story becomes weaker and weaker, as character and armor designs become more and more indulgent as if taking it’s art direction from some programmer’s wife’s son’s manga collection. The story to me at least, sounds like bad fanfaiction.

I want to applaud Metzen, as only after experiencing his writing and the fruits of his power at Blizz, do I now understand, corruption.

I just don’t understand why they ever sold out. Blizzard was making fucking mountains of money all on their own.

They were owned by Vivendi.Activision bought Vivendi so they also got Blizzard.
Fun fact:Blizzard at some point was owned by a company called CUC international.

The problem with Blizzard is that they’re so far up their own asses to ever actually think that maybe nuwow isn’t as good. They actually said warcraft 1+2 aren’t good games and everyone who enjoys them now is suffering from nostalgia.

They aren’t being silent about it. They’ve said in a ign interview that you goys are just nostalgic. Blizzard will keep stringing everyone along for good faith money.

What’s the point? It’s not as if the Nostalrius staff was making money off of its servers either, putting a disclaimer up front isn’t going to change anything. Elysium will just get shut down when it gets big enough as well.

That’s just the world of Blizzard nowadays, play by our rules or with our lawyers in court.

Warcraft 1 & 2 weren’t good when they came out, nor are they today. Warcraft 3 is the only good game in the franchise.

If Blizzard did this, then people would realize how incredibly braid dead wow has become. They want people to buy dragon mounts and level boosts. They don’t even care about sub money anymore.

Blizzard has changed over the years and in a lot of ways have alienated the audience that made them the success they are. The current batch of games, just doesn’t have that blizzard magic anymore.
