During this year’s Steam Dev Days conference, Valve business manager DJ Powers talked on the breadth of titles now available for the hugely popular gaming platform.
When presenting the runaway success of indie titles like Stardew Valley and Undertale, Powers said that Steam is a meritocracy, adding that “only the good games rise to the top.”
Powers noted that before, the aforementioned indie hits would have been passed over, leading us to speculate he’s referring to how the majority of the market is still dominated by big publishers with bloated marketing budgets. He could also be referring to heavily-curated distribution platforms.
How do you guys feel about the current state of Steam, as a gaming platform? Is there a variety of “good” games, or does popularity bring with it more mediocrity? Sound off in the comments below!
