The upcoming tactical RPG from Vanillaware Unicorn Overlord has been rated T by the ESRB. Questionable content includes “jiggling breasts”, “blood-spatter”, and more.
This isn’t entirely unexpected, after all Vanillaware is the developer who created the famous Sorceress in Dragon’s Crown. While we haven’t gotten to see much of Unicorn Overlord just yet, the iconic Vanillaware style can be seen in the characters.
You can read the full ESRB opinion here:
This is a strategy game in which players assume the role of a prince trying to liberate a fantasy kingdom from evil. From a 3/4-overhead perspective, players traverse lands while building an army and liberating areas (e.g., towns, fortresses, cities). Players can deploy and move military units (e.g., archers, knights) to battle enemy soldiers and mercenaries in turn-based combat.
Players can choose various actions (e.g., Attack, Defend), which are depicted in short animated sequences: units shooting arrows, slashing swords, casting magic spells. Battles are highlighted by cries of pain, impact sounds, and blood-splatter effects. Some female characters are designed with low-cut outfits (e.g., deep cleavage) and jiggling breasts. The word “bastard” appears in the game.
Emphasis: Ours
It looks like fanservice is back on the menu courtesy of Vanillaware and ATLUS, both companies are known for their boisterous female character designs. However in both the announcement trailer and store screenshots we have yet to see the aforementioned “jiggling breasts.”
Unicorn Overlord was announced earlier this year. Players will meet over 60 unique characters and use their unique abilities to conquer tactical maps. you can check out the announcement trailer below:
Past games from Vanillaware include Odin Sphere, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, Dragon’s Crown, and most recently GrimGrimoire OnceMore which is a remaster of their unique RTS from 2007.
Unicorn Overlord is expected to release on March 8 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
