Unicorn Overlord PC port isn’t happening due to publishing agreement

We’ve learned Vanillaware’s latest opus – Unicorn Overlord – probably won’t come to PC, ever, due to an existing publishing agreement.

Niche Gamer has long been advocates for every video game being put on PC, the superior platform. While most developers put their titles on PC, some are still holding out due to fear of piracy or other concerns.

Unicorn Overlord is the first game by the studio to be on Xbox so many expected a PC release is likely coming. A new interview (via Destructoid) confirms not only is Unicorn Overlord not coming to PC, it seems like it never will due to the existing publishing terms.

“As a publisher, we would like to deliver it to PC users as well, but per our agreement with Vanillaware, we are only releasing on console,” said Atlus producer Akiyasu Yamamoto. “In other words, there are no plans to port it to PC currently.”

So it’s clear that Atlus is actively looking to put their titles on virtually every platform now – thus securing more sales like any company would – however Vanillaware isn’t keen to make the jump.

Historically, Vanillaware has never put one of their games on PC in its twenty plus year history.

Their first game, Fantasy Earth Zero (developed as Fantasy Earth: The Ring of Dominion) was a stressful project for PC and their team was replaced by another studio – perhaps there’s some lingering doubts for PC as a platform.

Unicorn Overlord is was just launched on March 8th, 2024 for Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PS5.
