It’s becoming a bit “old hat” by now, but yet another classic series is getting a spiritual successor…only this time it’s Ultima Underworld.
Revealed on the project’s page by developer Otherside Entertainment, the game is meant to return to the very roots of the classic first person dungeon crawler and recapture its magic. Straight from the developer’s site comes the following description:
For our first title we’re bringing back the classic Ultima™ Underworld franchise, which we’re calling Underworld Ascension™. Our team include some of the folks who created the original franchise. When we made the original we looked to redefine the fantasy RPG genre. With the reboot we’re going right back to innovating, and our goal is to make the franchise more vital than ever. We are just getting started so little to see as yet, but rest assured, in the weeks to come we will be showing more and more. In the mean time we’d love to hear from you, because as fans you are an essential part of this franchise.
Ultima Underworld was a watershed moment in the RPG genre, paving the way for other first person RPGs and acting as a gaming industry stepping stone for famed Deus Ex developer Warren Spector. Acting as the inspiration behind Spector’s conspiratorial thriller as well as System Shock and Bioshock, Underworld is considered hallowed ground amongst the genre’s older fans. How they intend to recreate such a game in today’s crowded game market remains to be seen.
