Umbrella Corps, a Resident Evil-Themed Multiplayer Third-Person Shooter, is Revealed for PS4 and PC

Capcom has announced Resident Evil: Umbrella Corps for PlayStation 4 and PC.

The game is a multiplayer-focused third-person shooter set within the Resident Evil universe, and its coming sometime in 2016 worldwide.

Capcom describes the shooter as one that has challenging matches set within classic and historic Resident Evil environments.

Here’s the press release, via Capcom:

Gameplay Overview

Umbrella Corps is a new fast-paced third-person shooter set in the Resident Evil® universe. The competitive online game will feature quick, intense matches in compact battle zones themed from historic Resident Evil environments such as an Umbrella Facility map. Umbrella Corps utilizes the Unity engine developed by Unity Technologies.

Umbrella Corporation, a ruthless international pharmaceutical company, had been known for its genetic experiments and biological weaponry that led to worldwide devastation including the infamous Raccoon City incident. Although the organization was brought down in 2003, its legacy of bio-terrorism continued. In the present day, corporations with nebulous interests in bio-weaponry have hired squads of special forces for experimental battles in restricted virus-infected areas against other mercenaries.

Features

  • Close quarters battle – high-intensity, quick-play matches with no place to hide.
  • Fast-paced competitive team shooter – players can compete online in adrenaline-fueled matches.
  • Variety of unique match options – compete in various modes including the high-stakes One Life Match mode where players only get one chance apiece per round to take down the other team.
  • Resident Evil backdrop – familiar environments and enemies such as zombies populate each map, adding another threat or opportunity.
  • Analog aim and cover system – flexible system allows for lean and height adjustments for more precise control when firing from cover.
  • Gun and grenade based weaponry plus specialized gear with Resident Evil flair:
    • Brainer – a powerful melee axe which goes straight into the skull.
    • Tactical Shield – an arm-mounted guard allowing players to utilize a zombie as cover.
    • Terrain Spikes – boot-mounted spikes for trampling enemies.
    • Zombie Jammer – a device which repels zombies only when active.

Resident Evil: Umbrella Corps is built within the Unity engine, and is set to launch as a digital-only title for $29.99 / €29.99 / £24.99.

It seems alright I suppose. Like it’d be fun for an hour or two.

No sexy RE chicks to play as though.

Wait, Unity? Did Capcom already drop the Panty Raid engine completely then?

Well, at least Dead Aim was an interesting RE in First Person/Third Person. I would like to see it available once again.

“Panty Raid” instead of “Panta Rhei”.

It is a Unity game. That engine can run on refrigerators if the engineers can make it so.

There goes Capcom trying to appeal to the wrong demographic again. Instead of trying to break into the competitive shooter market, I’d rather see them focus on the kinds of games that made the company relevant to begin with.

RE2 Remake is confirmed and i am pretty sure a large ammount of that games funding will come from the profits this game see.

    Yeah I can play this sort of thing in RE4, RE5, RE6, REV 1,REV 2, MERC 3D, I don’t really desire this.

Capcom has enough money to fund the remake, with or without this game. I just hope that Capcom doesn’t ruin the remake by making it a more action-oriented title in which Claire and Leon travel together the entire time.

I assume this’ll be a horribly boring experience. I just want to sneak past zombies again while conserving ammo… good thing I own the original titles.

All the corridor footage when they’ve shown they have outdoors footage makes me think it’s gonna be mostly corridors…

I think ORC had good potential, but it needed some serious work. I’m not quite sure what to think of this one.

One of the biggest complaints against RE6 was that it was designed to appeal to a “Call of Duty” fanbase. It was a design decision that failed to draw in CoD players and alienated the original fanbase. It’s good to see thye learned a lesson from that and made this game. /s

The thing is, if Capcom made this into a zombie-survival multiplayer/mmo game in the vain of Outbreak then l would be grabbing that like a bucket of KFC. But this Team-competitive FPS direction? no… just no.
