Ultra-Rare NES Game Appears on Ebay, Current Bids at $40K

A former Nintendo employee has decided to auction off his extremely rare copy of Stadium Events. While the game is regularly a rare item, fetching thousands of dollars from collectors, this one is very special. Why, you ask?

According to the seller, Menaceone (his full name isn’t known at the time of this writing), it’s factory sealed. “While working at Nintendo, games are often available to employees at end-of-life cycles,” Menaceone told Gamespot. “I did not realize the value until 2011, when a story came out about this game being sold for $44,000.”

It’s worth noting that Menaceone worked at Nintendo for 22 years.

“I told my wife, ‘I know I have that game.’ I collect a lot of different items, so after looking through several boxes I found it,” Menaceone said. “Since I was still working for Nintendo I could not sell this item for profit, which is a smart company policy. When I left in 2012, it was possible for me to sell this game.”

So why is Stadium Events so damn rare? For one, when the game was produced back in 1987, only 2000 cartridges were ever made. Coming from this, it’s said that only 200 of these games ever made it to store shelves. The rarity continues – reportedly, there are only 20 copies of the game still in circulation, and finally with rumors saying only two of them being factory sealed. Is this copy one of those rarest of the rare?

A factory sealed copy for Stadium Events did make an appearance on eBay prior to this one in 2010, albeit from another seller. It managed to rake up $41,300, but the sale never went through as the winning bidder didn’t have the money to fork over. This listing was apparently as high as $99,600 at one point, although it has gone back down to $40,000.

The listing ends at 10PM, EST tomorrow, so we’ll update this post with whatever the winning bid is.
