In a quiet update, we’ve learned Ubisoft shut down online services for dozens of games, totaling nearly a hundred games.

As with any modern games that include some kind of online functionality or multiplayer, news that Ubisoft shut down online services for older games shouldn’t come as a surprise. Some of the games were apparently still running servers for PlayStation 2 – like Rainbow Six Lockdown, which came out back in 2005.

It’s also worth pointing out some games were running servers on platforms that have actually been shut down since, like the nearly dozen or so games that were also available via OnLive. Remember OnLive? Sony acquired them back in 2015 mostly to nab up all their patents, after which they shut the company down and ended its services.

Sony also acquired Gaikai, a former competitor to OnLive, and with the collective tech from both platforms launched their own branded cloud-gaming subscription with PlayStation Now. It seems like Sony could never get the service to catch on, so they’re now rolling all of this into their new multi-tier PlayStation Plus subscription.

In total 90 games are now only playable offline after Ubisoft shut down online services, meaning all in-game news, updates, player stats, and online multiplayer no longer work in those games. Ubisoft said any titles that use their Ubisoft Connect platform can no longer earn their “Units” rewards, and PC players will lose access to previously unlocked content – while console players can keep content if they maintain their old save game.
