Ubisoft has quickly uncensored Far Cry 4, after earlier having been caught by users on reddit censoring character models ten years after the fact.
The censorship triggered speculation that Chinese company Tencent was to blame due to their recent investment deal with Ubisoft. However, the censorship was quickly reversed, and Ubisoft community developer Patricia Brochu took to reddit to explain what had really happened.
Apparently, the game was never meant to be censored for a Western audience. Japanese censors had demanded the game’s nudity be censored upon release. As Brochu would go on to explain:
“After looking into it, we confirmed that there was a mistake during a recent update: content meant specifically for the Japanese version of the game was mistakenly uploaded to the worldwide version on Steam,” Brochu said. “This resulted in unintended changes, including censored models and assets. The team has already resolved the issue by re-uploading the correct data to the worldwide depot on Steam. If you’re still seeing anything off, we recommend restarting Steam and checking for updates.”
She added, “There are no plans to censor Far Cry at any time. This was simply an error tied to a specific regional build, and it’s now been corrected. Thanks to everyone who flagged this and helped us investigate. We appreciate your patience and understanding!”
It is good to know that censoring the game for everyone was not Ubisoft’s intention. It is understandable that users were suspicious if this was a case of Chinese-mandated censorship, similar to how recent anime and other media have been affected.
