In August of last year, Rayman creator and visionary Ubisoft creator Michel Ancel formed his own studio, Wild Sheep Studio, and later announced a bold new IP – Wild, a new open world game for the Playstation 4.
Prior to this, Ancel had taken up development on the much-anticipated Beyond Good & Evil 2. However, the formation of his own development studio left fans questioning whether or not he was still at Ubisoft.
At this year’s E3, IGN ran a report that claimed Ancel was no longer working on Beyond Good & Evil 2. The report stated that Ubisoft senior VP of sales and marketing, Tony Key, had said the following, when asked if Ancel was still working on the game:
“So he’s [Ancel] a busy guy right now. But no… He’s got things going on and I can’t really comment on his bandwidth. I know he’s very busy. We still work with him on things.”
This naturally got quite a few people worried and or upset, as the original Beyond Good & Evil had garnered a dedicated cult following. Soon after the report began to make waves and get picked up by other outlets, IGN quietly removed the post, with no further explanation.
Following this, Ubisoft sent a blanket statement out to most press, essentially debunking the claim IGN had published:
What was reported by IGN is untrue. Michel is still leading creative development of several exciting projects being developed by Ubisoft Montpellier.
IGN has yet to clarify why they ran the report, and why they later redacted it. We’ll keep you guys posted.
