Ubisoft announced Child of Light at GDC Europe. Patrick Plourde, who previously directed Far Cry 3, will be leading the project. Plourde suggested he wants to move away from testosterone fueled games, and that Child of Light draws heavily upon games like Final Fantasy VI and the artistic influence of Hayao Miyazaki and Yoshitaka Amano.
I’m really interested in that last bit because Miyazaki and Amano are two wildly different kinds of artists who tend to work in very different spaces. Saying something like that is a bit like saying, “our new television show was inspired by Twin Peaks and draws heavily upon the influence of Fred Rogers and David Lynch.”
It’s kind of an odd thing to say, but I’m only reposting from here, and I’m not really complaining about it. If more games tried to be like Final Fantasy VI then I think the world would be a better place. We wish Patrick and his team the best of luck!
