While it’s no longer a secret or rumor that Twitter actually shadowbans people based on the behavior and or politics, we’ve learned that Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey is going to speak before government officials regarding claims of censorship on the platform.
The Twitter CEO is going to testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on September 5th.
“Twitter is an incredibly powerful platform that can change the national conversation in the time it takes a tweet to go viral,” panel chairman Rep. Greg Walden (R-Oregon) said in a statement.
“When decisions about data and content are made using opaque processes, the American people are right to raise concerns,” Walden continued. “This committee intends to ask tough questions about how Twitter monitors and polices content, and we look forward to Mr. Dorsey being forthright and transparent regarding the complex processes behind the company’s algorithms and content judgement calls.”
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-California) and other Republicans have demanded for Dorsey to come before Congress to respond to claims of censorship against conservative users, specifically.
“Over the past several months, I have seen more and more examples of censorship that impact public officials and concerned citizens expressing conservative thought,” McCarthy said in a statement. “After several conversations with Mr. Dorsey and the Chairman, we all agree that transparency is the only way to fully restore Americans’ trust in these important public platforms.”
Dorsey has been making the rounds in media with new interviews amidst the cries of censorship, all the while avoiding the commitment to an appearance before Congress.
Rival social media platform Facebook has also been in the hot seat recently due to cries of censorship on their platform. Despite owner Mark Zuckerberg also testifying before Congress and being grilled over mostly similar concerns, no actions have really been taken by either parties.
