Twitch has Banned the Streaming of Senran Kagura: Estival Versus [UPDATE]

[UPDATE on April 10th, 2015]

We’ve gotten a clarification for Twitch’s stance towards Senran Kagura: Estival Versus. Apparently, users are allowed to stream the game, but the moment “sexually explicit” acts or content are showcased, they are grounds to have your stream closed, or your account banned.

A Twitch representative gave the details:

“Senran Kagura: Estival Versus is permitted for streaming, but you still must adhere to our Rules of Conduct when doing so. Per our rules regarding sexually explicit acts or content, the sexually suggestive scenes in this game should not be the focus of your stream.”

We’ve learned (via KotakuinAction) that Twitch has banned the streaming of Senran Kagura: Estival Versus on their streaming network.

Reports of users getting their Twitch streams randomly shut down had been coming out, prompting a Reddit user to go to Twitch directly. When asked whether or not Estival Versus could be streamed on their platform, Twitch representative Hassan Bokhari replied:

“No, this game would not be allowed on our platform, sorry.”

When pressed further, the representative said:

“Our rules of conduct are pretty cut and dry. We do not allow games of this nature on our platform. If you would like to look for other streaming platforms to stream these types of visual novels that have adult content, then please feel free.

This is not something we will allow on our service.”

So there you have it—apparently Senran Kagura: Estival Versus is a visual novel, and it has been deemed completely inappropriate for Twitch.

I wish I could be mad about this, but I just can’t as Twitch has been pretty consistent of late with it’s “ban for the naughty” approach. I’m disappointed that they have chosen this stance, but I’ll credit them for being consistent and sticking to their guns. Bit of a shame though, isn’t it?

  2. Malcolm_Ecks
    April 6, 2015 at 9:29 am

So they can let TotalBiscuit stream HunniePop but no one can stream Senran Kagura? Twitch has been becoming really restrictive real quick since Amazon bought them.

Death and people being killed is cool, but some sultry content is a big No-No? This really just proves how much this country has it’s head up it’s ass in terms of what’s “appropriate” anymore.

Counter-Striker:GO, any CoD, BF, etc… Come on. I cant’ wait until Twitch is dead and people move to something else. So sick of their shitty site.

Apparently it’s because of the bug that allowed people to take off the girls’ panties (only to discover they’re Barbies) – which has been fixed in a mandatory update. But nope, it still makes it a porn visual novel! Video if you haven’t seen it: https://vimeo.com/123798726 NSFW

“Visual novels” You have got to be shitting me. That would be like calling any of the Dynasty Warriors games a visual novel despite blatantly being a beat em up. Twitch can go fall in a ditch as far as I’m concerned. Fucking gymnophobes.

This is not true, Twitch is inconsistent with the enforcement of their rules and that’s at the heart of the issue. Look up the Ultra controversy if you need further proof of their shenanigans.

So let me get this straight, PS4 has a streaming service that uses twitch but using it will get you banned. What a shit show.

Let’s see if they’ll ban Mortal Kombat next week, where you can rip apart and turn your opponents into a pool of blood.

  19. Horuden

It has been rated CERO D, so 17+. Nothing explicit, just extremely suggestive.

  20. ndyBery
    April 6, 2015 at 9:49 am

I don’t really get why the KiA thread is tagged [ethics]. I mean twitch is definitely inconsistent with what it allows, and I encourage people to point out hypocrisy and question why extreme violence is considered more acceptable than nipples, but I don’t see how this in particular is an ethics issue.

  21. Demetirus

Addendum: No extra sources are needed it seems. The comment section offers plenty! GTA5, DA:I and Metro are all a-okay it seems and I’m pretty sure there’s plenty of adult content in there… Wonder what their stance on the Witcher is.

Why don’t they just follow ESRB or PEGI ratings and ban games based on that? There would be no room for vagueness or interpretation if they simply decided to ban all AO or PEGI 18 rated games.

  28. OverlordZetta
    April 6, 2015 at 11:01 am

Has anyone actually brought up the contradictions to them, as well as the fact that this is a PS4 game that is not actually “adult” nor a visual novel? If they’re saying D rated games should be banned, fine, but then they need to put their money where their mouth is and ban all of them.

  36. deadeye
    April 6, 2015 at 11:57 am

It’s silly, but I can kind of understand their decision. The games can be easily mistaken for softcore porn. Or just porn.

And I feel like this is a legal decision rather than a moral one. Most things like this are. Twitch is watched by tons of kids. So little johnny’s overprotective mom walking in on him watching some senran kagura (for the plot, obviously) is a lawsuit waiting to happen,

Yeah, it’s stupid, but that’s what companies like this have to think about. And again, as dumb as it is, that same overprotective mom probably wouldn’t bat an eye if she walked in on him watching someone’s head get chainsawed off. It’s just the way things are.

So, I just don’t think it’s a case of “titties are evil”, it’s a case of not wanting to get sued for stupid reasons. And ultimately, it’s their service, and they have the right to run it how they see fit.

  37. Akuma
    April 6, 2015 at 12:00 pm

  38. BattlerArisato
    April 6, 2015 at 12:06 pm

There’s no age restriction option on Twitch? I’ve never seen twitch before but I doubt there wouldn’t be any way to protect the kids from seeing this kind of stuff so I doubt this is a legitimate reason.
I understand their fear of getting in trouble by this kind of stuff but if would be far better if they leave Senran Kagura as a +18 stream only or something like that.

  40. MaidKillua
    April 6, 2015 at 12:18 pm

Age restriction on the internet tends to consist of asking the person how old they are. It’s not like it would stop a kid from getting in and getting caught by his lawsuit-happy mother looking at some anime titties. Anyone who is old/ smart enough to count backwards and get the right date of birth can lie through it. So maybe they’ll keep out 4 year olds

  41. AnonDog
    April 6, 2015 at 12:27 pm

In reality this just says more about our culture and how damaged it is than anything else. Violence and Death are all good, but boobs are bad… wut?

And while it is their “service” and they can run it as they see fit why is it women are still allowed to have their boobs hanging out in low cut tops when it’s against their TOS?

I’d also love to see them try and sue twitch for virtual boobs. That would make my day seeing that.

I really don’t get this separation at all. Look what’s even on nightly television anymore, in our music, and culture (in the West( in general. But this is unacceptable? I can’t understand this at all, how did violence in video games seemingly make people go ‘Oh yeah, that’s fantasy violence’ but when it’s anything sexual it’s clearly marked as something that should and will be shamed from a majority.

  52. ReaperX30

Why do ppl keep using twitch anyway ?

it sucks, twitch lag makes interaction with the chat impossible, watching old streams is not even a thing anymore between the deletion and the copyright muting, servers are extremely laggy to many parts of the world and everytime there is an exceptional (but predictable, like during esports tournaments) load the whole site starts coughing out blood

  67. patyos

AAA games bring a big chunk of the ad money and viewers, if they banned them twitch would be replaced overnight, EA, Activision, Rockstar, etc would make sure of that

they can only be snotty with smaller games

its their site, they can do whatever they want, what they really need is more competition so whenever this happens we can just go “screw you” and move to the competitor

Then they should add some sort of adults only option. From there, anything beyond that would become part of the EULA users sign when they make an account saying that the personal information they’ve entered is correct and Twitch is no longer responsible for the content they view.

To shrine some light on the reason why people are getting banned from streaming SKEV is not because of the gameplay. It’s because you have people making extremely “suggestive” poses and actions with the other characters with their models. Then everyone will get pissed and they will put it back to the way it was. Also, you don’t have to watch it if you don’t want to. This can be won with basic logic, assuming that exist.

The senran games are erotic, but never fully exposed.

I see twitch is playing the FAILED high moral grounds like a SJW but it perfectly fine for extreme violence to stream on twitch a good example of double standards.

I love the SK games but I can see why Twitch wouldn’t want them to be streamed on their site. The part that bothers me though is the inconsistency, why is SK not okay while games with similarly explicit content like Dragon Age and GTA V get away with it?

I guess that popularity means that it’s one rule for one game and a different rule for the other. Twitch have handled this very poorly.

Sooooo what do you have to then do avoid the scenes Twitch deems unsuitable to stream? Not enter the dressing room? Okay that’s doable. Skip cutscenes? Okay maybe, as the risk of story elements being missed. Skip dialog, where most of the story is told? Can’t do that. Skip transformations? May not do it all the time since, for me anyway when I played Burst, I let the transformations play out sometimes to re-assess any situation I would be in if the enemies are being extra difficult to deal with before the action resumes. Not play as Haruka? Kiss my ass.

It’s not inconsistent. It’s Japanese, that automatically adds 30 points to the lewdness scale. That’s just common sense.

    Ok, yeah, it’s fucking inconsistent.

    Help me understand this.

” Per our rules regarding sexually explicit acts or content, the
sexually suggestive scenes in this game should not be the focus of your

So their rules are against “sexually explicit acts or content” yet they are have a problem with the game due to “suggestive scenes” ?

Sounds to me like the rule is against “explicit” but they are acting against Senran Kagura’s “suggestive”.
And the difference between explicit and suggestive is a pretty big one. So they aren’t really following their own rules here, they’re doing whatever they want.

SJW’s rules are complex. This sounds to me rather that they are racist and content that comes from Japan get a ban just because.

How about they just you know create a Mature content filter and then go after anyone watching mature content when they shouldn’t. That seems like a way more intelligent decision than dealing with these kerfuffles.

I was pretty pissed about the original story but the update clearly shows that twitch went through a lot of backlash and changed their stance. I still don’t appreciate the way they’re looking at it but do understand what they might be worried about. I still think age-gating is the appropriate way to look at this but at the end of the day, twitch can do whatever the fuck they want.

I just got that same email but I got to laugh it also says it’s the best website from Wall Street jornal.

The fact is you can stream senran but if the game gonna shows adult content you can’t forces it by means the stream must ends then resumes when the adult content goes pass.

That what it sounds to me it’s stupid as hell.

Does it cover extreme violence with sexually in them no twitch can do what they want but they paid for it when people seeks other streaming sites.

Well, at least they aren’t entirely censoring it, which is good. However this does further show how puritanical Twitch is that they’d feel the need to even say something like “Per our rules regarding sexually explicit acts or content, the
sexually suggestive scenes in this game should not be the focus of your

“Per our rules regarding sexually explicit acts or content, the sexually suggestive scenes in this game should not be the focus of your stream”

“Focus,” huh. So it’s totally fine if so long as I focus on the game play elements and it just so happens there are suggestive scenes involved, but that isn’t the main focus of the stream. Also, “should not” is awfully passive when before it was zero tolerance for Senran Kagura. Of course, it sure seems the idiots enforcing Twitch rules actually thought SK was a porn VN at first, so maybe it was a mistake on their part. If that was the case, how about researching the damn game before you blanket ban it because of SJW outrage?

I don’t think complex I use they are easy to read, just 1 word “hate” they hate all games, with or with-out sexual themes.

They hate mario because of the “saving of a woman tropes in games” etc etc.

In fact I make a rule when it comes to SJWs I don’t listen to them with their verbal-shits.

& Just think thank god they not my friend.

  121. Exare
    April 12, 2015 at 9:21 am

Pfffft. This is ridiculous. Twitch has gone downhill since Amazon bought them, they’ve ruined it with all this censoring. I thought marking your channel for mature audiences was good enough. Next you won’t be able to swear even with the disclosure. I say it’s time to find a new streaming service.

Streaming interactive softcore pr0n, basically all the game really is, is what they don’t want. Don’t make up excuses for this game. Just go fap to something stop watching others play. It’s weird.
