Previously, Disney owned the worldwide distribution rights for Studio Ghibli films. However as of 2020, the rights to both theatrical and home releases of Studio Ghibli films has been given to GKIDS. In 2019, HBO acquired the exclusive streaming rights thanks to a deal with GKIDS.

Earlier this year, Netflix acquired streaming rights for Studio Ghibli films in all regions except Japan, United States, and Canada. However this has changed with Netflix Canada’s recent announcement of Studio Ghibli films being added to their library.

These twenty films make up Studio Ghibli’s entire library of feature-length films; save for Grave of The Fireflies. Its rights are held by Shinchosha Publishing, who produced the film and published the original story.

It’s unknown at time of writing if Studio Ghibli’s films will ever make their way to Netflix in the United States. It’s also unknown if Studio Ghibli’s first ever 3D-Animated Film will see an international release on streaming platforms. As we previously reported, this is  Arya and The Witch; based off Diana Wynne Jones’ Earwig and The Witch.
