Toxikk is the Anti-Thesis to the Stale, Boring Call of Duty Formula

Remember when shooters used to be about twitch gameplay, addicting combat, and rewarding players with skill? I surely do, and ever since modern shooters adopted the ongoing meta-game of leveling up and earning perks, I’ve gotten tired of the whole carrot-on-a-stick game.

Reakktor Studios are trying to break that formula with Toxikk, an arena based first person shooter (wait! don’t click the back arrow!) that simply removes all of that superfluous bullshit and goes back to the core of what makes an arena shooter fun. Featured above, you can watch a gameplay trailer for the game that was recorded during some live gameplay sessions.

I’ll break down the core features of Toxikk for you – no leveling, no perks, no regenerating health, no cover system, no configurable weapons, no classes, and lastly – no iron sight aiming. The game will be free to play whenever it launches.

Let developer Reakktor do a bit of the talking:

“Instead [of modern shooter tropes] you get fast and precise movement (with deeply configurable mouse controls), double jumps, dodge jumps, booster pick-ups, nine iconic weapons to be carried around simultaneously, secondary fire modes for every weapon, vehicular game modes, jump pads, health-packs, lots of vertical gameplay, optional mutators (incl. instagib) and everything else that made these kind of games so addictive. And if you want to practice your skills offline, Toxikk also features a configurable BOT MODE.”

Toxikk is being poised for a Steam Early Access release in a few months, but until then, Reakktor is imploring you to head to their forums and give them feedback.
