Touhou Kobuto V Heads West on PS4, PS Vita Summer 2017

NIS America has announced a western release for yet another Touhou Project game, Touhou Kobuto V.

The new game will be released for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita sometime this summer in North America and Europe. Featured above, you can view the debut trailer for the game.

Developed by Cubetype and released in November of last year, Touhou Kobuto V is a one-on-one 3D fighting/action game where players fight across 3D arenas. You’ll have to defeat your opponents with an onslaught of bullets and melee attacks to win.

NISA are milking the Tohou franchise to its full potential. We’ve got 2 games coming in April and this one in the summer. In any case at least this one looks to be of a higher quality.

I just want to know when will NISA give us an actual bullet hell shoot em up Touhou instead of these fan games.

Maybe it could be good(?). I mean, if they keep giving us more Touhou games, maybe one day we will get one that is actually decent, but who knows. All I want is a remaster of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil

As of now, Genso Rondo was mediocre (personally) and the only thing I like from the game is the soundtrack and maybe with the gameplay. Scarlet Curiosity is as of now the only decent one (atleast when compared to Genso Rondo) since it reminds me a lot of the Ys games. I have no faith for Touhou Double Team and Genso Wanderer since both look like they were made in Newgrounds. Oh well, atleast from NISA, we will be getting RPG Maker Fes, Danganronpa 3, and Ys 7.

It looks pretty good and it has some extra features like VR mode, so my guess is that some more work has been put into it. The issue I have is that they’ll be releasing 3 Touhou games this year, which is a bit excessive.

So it’s like a worse dissidia, but with touhou characters…

I want a bullet hell shoot em up too, but since Zun refuses to sell the original games (they are sold on Comiket) I don’t see that happening. I recomend you finding a torrent with all the games, the fan made english patches aren’t that bad tbh

It *is* a fan made game, so….yeah. Expect more Touhou fanmade spinoffs like a card game, dating sim, Monster hunter-style, third person shooter, party, dungeon crawler or hell, racing.

Pretty much what I thought. It’s Virtual-On with granny pants.

    “Monster hunter-style”

    Wait – this exists??

Nope. I only said it as joke considering that there’s a lot of Touhou fanmade games that ranges from a roguelike to a 2D fighting game. Though I would like to see how a Monster Hunter-style (or maybe a Warriors style) Touhou game.

Oh god, please. Youkai hunting with bullet hell elements thrown in.

I wanna grind Ran over and over again… if you know what I mean.

Little girls wearing said granny pants.

I blame Touhou for liking them. Panties becomes inferior to the underpants they are wearing.

Zun has never been really been fond of the idea of subjecting his games to widespread distribution through “mainstream” means, especially through digital downloads. I’m even amazed that he even allowed Sony to let them release TH14.5 on the PS4.

In any case, unless Zun agrees to start releasing the danmaku games for the PlayDoujin lineup, whatever Touhou games we are likely to have brought over are most likely going to be limited to the PS4 version of TH14.5. Sony owns the PlayDoujin brand and likely has brokered a deal with the doujin circles involved, so all NISA needs to do is to get in contact with Sony to help “nudge” Zun/Tasofro in bringing it over.

It’s not just a matter of the mainline Touhou games either. NISA’s choices for Touhou fangames are likely going to be limited to whatever that’s in the PlayDoujin lineup. If they wanted to localize a non-PD game, they wouldn’t have Sony to help facilitate talks with the doujin circles–They’d have to jump through a bunch of hoops to even get any of the circles to talk to them.

True but the .5 games are co ops between Shangai Alice and the other company (forgot their name, Prism something if I remember right) and those are fighting games most of the Touhou fanbase don’t really find as appealing as the bullet hell games. and like you said Zun is really an hard ass when it comes to the classic Touhou games and since you can consider him as doujin dev I don’t see him pairing up with big names to release his games, considering how popular they are in Japan they never had a true port to a big console (the bullet hell games that is), and we also have to take in consideration that Touhou has been releasing since the 90’s and in over a decade it never really had any kind of port that I know off. I would love to see the originals get a phsysical release but I don’t think that will happen, and if it does happen I don’t want NISA to have them

The fighting games were co-developed between Team Shanghai Alice and Tasofro.

That’s it. From what I read Zun isn’t that involved in those, and since it’s 2 companies that own the rights to the fighting games it’s easier for them to be localized since all that has to happen is one of the 2 companies express interest in bringing the game over, plus those games aren’t that related to the main series, which I think Zun completly owns

It’s not just bringing games overseas either. It’s a matter of Zun actually allowing his own games to undergo mainstream/digital distribution in general. Can’t localize what isn’t even that widely released in Japan itself.

Despite allowing things like Touhou fan-works or fan-created merchandise to be released by other circles, he isn’t fond of the idea of making his own games as widely available as other circles do, because to him, he strictly prefers to make Touhou games as a hobby, not a business. He barely profits off of it, and prefers to keep it that way.

Needless to say, Zun is indie-minded to the core.

I actually have more respect of him for that. He probably thinks, has it as been proven several times, that usually when things go mainstream they turn to shit due to the fact that companies will want more and more profit thus milking the genre till people hate it or get tired of it. I actually kind of agree with his way of thinking, it’s better to keep as a hobby with a set level of quality than milk it for all it’s worth thus ruining a long running steady series, sure it may not sell millions but he managed to build a cult game with a legion off loyal followers and that is amazing by my standarts

No shit, of course it’s what makes his games amazing.

If he gets balls-deep into doing wider distribution, he’s gonna have to sign a contract with game companies who can distribute physical copies or host digital versions on a walled-garden storefront. In exchange, he’ll be pressured to enter a restrictive contract who might either try to compel him into pumping out more and more titles or outright control what he should or shouldn’t put in a game in exchange for distributing it.

We’ve already seen it with Reisen being an exclusive character in the PS4 version of TH14.5. Only a fool would think that Sony played no part in getting Zun and Tasofro to add her to incentivize players into buying the PS4 edition over the PC version.

Exactly, abbiding to contracts and such would only steal his creative freedom which could very well doom the series. I say let Touhou stay the way it is now, sure we have to resort to getting the games through less honest means but it’s not like we have much choice. At least that way Touhou can continue to be how the creator intends it to be which has merit by itself because if he wanted he could make a lot of money, it’s rare to see a creator with that level of integrity nowadays

Yeah. It’s a miracle he hasn’t succumbed to selling out the entire Touhou franchise to one of the Japanese game companies out there, especially considering its popularity in the doujin community.

If he did, you bet your ass we’d be seeing abominations such as a free-to-play Touhou “game” on mobile. That would truly spell the end of the series.

Ohh damn, I can imagine. It’s easy to picture a card based touhou mobile game with abominal gacha with shitty rates, like 2% to get the rarest cards (which would probably be the chars everybody wants like Flandre) and like shitty pay only unique card variations. I have nothing against people who like f2p games, I like them too if they are fair (like Kancolle, where you have to obtain everything in-game and P2W doesn’t exist) but in Touhou’s case I can only picture a giant milking game which is 99% gacha 1% actual game

  25. grgspunk
    March 6, 2017 at 5:28 pm

I got a problem with F2P “fans” myself. The mobile market has practically destroyed the handheld market with its bullshit freemium/gacha gameplay models. I’m glad Zun never fell for it.

Another thing: A fan of Kancolle is my enemy, dude. I fucking hate that franchise and those bitch-ass shipbitches. The only good shipbitch is a shipbitch that gets sunk with an AGM-84. Don’t speak of it again.

Not a problem bro, I like it you don’t. I ain’t gonna start a rant or an all out war here just because you don’t like, opinions are opinions, I like Kancolle, I’ve been playing it for 2 years and the only thing I gotta say is compared to other games which I play like Granblue Fantasy or Ange Vierge I find Kancolle more player friendly since the rates don’t fuck you in the ass all the time. Now lets just follow our separate ways, no need to get violent. We both respect Zun too much to start lashing out at each other for something so small and stupid like different opinions
