I was contacted by the staff running a very exciting documentary focused on the DJMAX series, a Korean music/rhythm game franchise that originated in Korean arcades, only to later make a splash here in the West.
The new documentary, Touching Sound – The Technika Documentary, is on Kickstarter, seeking $6,500 to shoot a 45-minute documentary on the series, its developers, and its fans.
The story of Pentavision, the original developer of DJMAX, is a sad one. With the series only in existence for roughly four years, the release of DJMAX Technika Tune was essentially the final and most ambitious of all their releases. Now, the arcade and home releases of DJMAX have essentially been shut off, making online play/leaderboards impossible.
The staff behind the documentary have already conducted over 15 interviews, with many more to come. Some of the upcoming interviews will also include staff that did the original localization for DJMAX, so we’ll get to hear firsthand accounts of taking the series outside of Korea.
The staff of DJMAX has started work on various other projects, most notably Beatcraft Cyclon, a brand new music/rhythm game by a newly formed Korean studio, Nurijoy. While the focus of this documentary is on Pentavision and DJMAX, it’s nice to know the series lives on in a spiritual successor.
